본 연구의 목적은 5∼6세기 서로마 기독교 수도문헌에 나타난 청빈이해의 변화과정을 설명하는 것이다. 특별히 요안네스 카시아누스의 수도문헌과 베네딕투스의 『규칙서』에 나타난 청빈이해를 비교 및 분석하고자 한다. 그동안 카시아누스와 베네딕투스가 활동했던 갈리아와 이탈리아의 5∼6세기 정치, 사회적 변동과 수도문헌의 전체적인 구조를 고려하면서 청빈이해의 특징을 분석한 연구는 매우 드물다. 또한 베네딕투스가 카시아누스의 영성신학에 크게 의존하고 있음에도 불구하고 그들의 청빈이해를 비교, 검토하지 못했다. 본 논문은 선행연구들이 명확히 제시하지 못한 3가지 측면을 분석하고자 한다. 첫째, 카시아누스의 청빈이해에 관한 최근 연구의 특징과 방향을 설명할 것이다. 둘째, 베네딕투스의 청빈이해를 정치, 사회적 배경을 고려하고, 『규칙서』의 전체 구조와 연관해서 분석할 것이다. 셋째, 카시아누스와 베네딕투스의 청빈이해를 비교 및 검토할 것이다. 본 연구를 통해서 5∼6세기 서로마 수도원 청빈이해의 변화과정을 밝히고, 고대 수도원 운동이 정치, 사회적 변동과 전환의 시기를 경험하면서 교회와 사회에 제시했던 기독교적 대안의 일면을 파악해 볼 수 있을 것이다.

This study explains the evolution of the concept of poverty as reflected in the monastic literature of John Cassian and Benedict. Previous studies have not paid much attention to how the monastic poverty of Cassian and Benedict was influenced by political and social changes in Gaul and Italy during the 5th and 6th centuries. Consequently, this study sheds light on three crucial aspects that previous studies have not thoroughly explored. First, it will describe the features of the recent studies on Cassian’s understanding of poverty. Second, an analysis of Benedict’s understanding of poverty will be conducted, considering the political and social context of the time. Third, a comparative examination of monastic poverty adopted by Cassian and Benedict will be undertaken. This research will clarify the changes in the understanding of poverty during the 5th and 6th centuries, providing insights into the alternative aspects presented by the monastic movement within the context of political and social transformations.
