최근 역겨움이라는 감정에 대한 관심은 여러 연구 분야에 걸쳐 증가하고 있다. 특히 국내의 많은 연구자들은 역겨움 자체를 화두로 삼는 연구가 아니더라도 혐오를 화두로 하여 역겨움을 포괄하는 연구를 활발하게 진행하고 있다. 이는 오늘날 우리 사회가 흔히 혐오 사회라 특징 지워질 만큼 여러 층위의 혐오 문제가 심각하게 부상하고 있으며 이러한 혐오의 양상이 아직 완전히 종식되지 않은 COVID-19 시국과 맞물려 더욱 노골적으로 드러났다는 것과 무관하지 않다. 이 글은 전반적인 사회 현상으로서의 혐오보다는 예술작품과 관련하여 역겨움이라는 감정이 작동하는 방식에 주목한다. 특히 역겨움을 비합리적 감정이자 우리 사회에서 건설적인 역할을 할 수 없는 것으로 간주하는 누스바움의 논의를 비판적으로 검토한다. 이를 통해 본고는 역겨움을 재현하는 예술이나 역겹다고 여겨지는 예술작품에 대한 감상 및 비평이 사회 속에서 순기능을 담당할 수 있는 가능성을 적극적으로 탐색하고자 한다.

Recently, interest in the emotion of disgust has been growing across many research fields. In particular, many researchers in Korea are actively conducting research that encompasses disgust through the topic of hate or aversion, although the research does not focus on disgust itself. This is not irrelevant to the fact that the problem of hate is emerging at various levels so seriously that our society today is often characterized as a hate society. And it has become more blatant in conjunction with the COVID-19 situation, which has not yet completely ended. This article focuses on the way the emotion of disgust operates in relation to works of art rather than hate or aversion as a broader social phenomenon, and critically examines Nussbaum's discussion of disgust as an irrational emotion that cannot play a constructive role in our society. In doing so, this paper seeks to explore the possibility that the appreciation and criticism of works of art that represents disgust or are considered disgusting can play a positive role in society.
