스티븐 홀은 현상학적 건축가로 언급되며 그의 건축은 빛, 물성 등을 통한 건축경험을 중시하고 그만의 방식으로 다양한 프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 그는 여러 감각을 중요하게 생각하는 건축가지만 그가 만드는 시각체험 역시 주요 연구대상이다. 본 연구에서는 스티븐 홀이 계획하는 시각체험 방식에 대해 살펴보고자 하며 다른 시설에 비해 기능적 요구가 적고 건축가의 생각을 표현하기 좋은 교외주택들은 건축가의 아이디어를 알 수 있는 사례 중 하나이다. 풍경을 매개로 시각체험 제공 방식을 스티븐 홀의 주택 분석을 통해 분석함으로써 교외주택 설계를 위한 기초 아이디어를 제공하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 이를 위해 창이 자유로워진 근대건축에서 창에 대한 자신의 생각을 언급한 꼬르뷔지에의 생각을 중심으로 주택에서 풍경을 수용하는 방식을 살펴보고 시각체험은 수용 주체의 인식과 관련된 부분으로 주체의 움직임 속에서 발생하기 때문에 건축공간에서 움직임을 살펴보았다. 스티븐 홀의 교외주택 분석 결과 스티븐 홀의 교외주택은 복수의 매스 방향을 다르게 배치해 풍경에 차이를 만들며 건물 각도가 달라지는 지점에서 다중전망을 제공한다. 단일 매스의 경우 창을 여러 방향으로 계획하여 창에 수용되는 풍경을 다양하게 한다. 내부공간에서 움직임은 트래킹 형식을 사용하여 창을 대하는 방식과 몸을 전환했을 때 창을 마주하고 가는 방식을 사용하고 있다. 이를 통해 스티븐 홀은 교외주택에서 다양한 풍경의 제공과 움직임과 관련하여 창에 다가가는 움직임의 과정에서 풍경의 파편을 인지하고 창을 통해 외부 풍경을 통합하는 시각체험을 하게 된다. 이것은 보이는 것이 아니라 보는 과정의 체험을 중요시 한다는 점을 보여준다.

Steven Holl is referred to as a phenomenological architect. His architecture emphasizes architectural experiences through light and materiality, and he carries out various projects in his own way. He is an architect who considers multiple senses important, but the visual experiences he creates are also a major subject of research. In this study, we will examine the visual experience method planned by Steven Holl. Suburban houses, which have fewer functional requirements than other facilities and are good for expressing the architect's thoughts, are one of the examples that can reveal the architect's ideas. The purpose of this study is to provide basic ideas for suburban housing design by analyzing the way visual experiences are provided through landscape through Stephen Holl housing analysis. To this, this study will look at the way landscapes are seen in houses, focusing on Corbusier's thoughts, and the visual experience is related to the perception of the subject because it occurs in the subject's movement. As a result of analysis of Steven Holl suburban houses, Steven Holl suburban houses create differences in the landscape by arranging multiple masses in different directions and provide multiple views from points where the building angles change. In the case of a single mass, windows are planned in multiple directions to vary the scenery accommodated in the windows. Movement in the internal space uses mostly a tracking method to face the window and a method of facing the window when the body is switched. Through this, Steven Holl made recognize fragments of the landscape in the process of approaching the window in relation to the movement and provision of various landscapes in suburban houses, and has a visual experience that integrates the external landscape through the window. This shows that the importance is placed on the experience of the seeing process rather than what is seen.
