삼국시대 신라와 가야의 수장층은 화려하게 장식된 말을 통해 자신들의 권세를 드러냈는데, 가장 대표적인 장식마구가 각종 운주와 행엽으로 꾸민 후걸이이다. 지금까지는 주로 운주와 행엽에 초점을 맞추어 연구가 진행되었으며, 재질의 한계 때문에 후걸이끈 자체에 대한 연구는 미진하였다. 2010년대에 들어 가죽끈의 제작 및 장식방법에 대한 연구가 있었고, 마구에 끈목이 사용된 예가 있음을 인지하고 그 제직기법을 밝히기도 하였다. 행엽의 구금구와 운주의 각에 남아있는 유기질끈의 흔적을 조사한 결과 경주 천마총, 고령 지산동 44, 45호분, 함안 도항리 (문)4호분에서 여러 엮임흔을 가진 끈목의 사용이 확인되었다. 천마총, 지산동 44호분에는 견사끈목이 피혁끈에 보조적으로 사용되었으며, 지산동 45호분, 도항리 (문)4호 분에는 견사끈목과 피혁끈목 자체를 후걸이 끈으로 사용하였다. 이들 끈은 반구형운주에 의해 연결되어 복조식, 단순격자식 후걸이를 구성하고 끝에는 심엽형행엽과 검릉형행엽이 수하된다. 이들 자료는 모두 6세기 전반대의 자료로, 6세기대에 들어 금속제의 운주와 행엽 이외에 새로운 제직기법으로 만든 끈목이라는 소재를 사용하였으며, 끈목의 엮음 효과나 색조의 대비를 통해 후걸이의 장식성을 극대화하였다.

In the Three Kingdoms Period, the leaders of Silla and Gaya revealed their power to glamify a horse with various ornaments, especially, the saddle breeching consisted of links and pendants. The saddle breeching was studied focused on the decorative feature and hierarchy according to a shape, quality and combination of links and pendants. There was no study about a strap of the saddle breeching because the limitation of the material. In the 2010s, there was a study how to make and decorate a leather strap, and it was recognized that a plaited cord was used in a harness. By observing the remained organic substance, the vestige of a plaited cord was found in the Cheonmacong of Gyeongju, No. 44 and 45 of Jisandong Tombs of Goryeong and No.4 of Dohangri Tombs of Haman. In the Cheonmacong and No. 44 tomb of Jisandong Tombs, a silk plaited cord was used as a supplement of the leather strap. In the No. 45 tomb of Jisandong Tombs and No.4 tomb of Dohangri Tombs, a silk or leader plaited cord itself consisted the saddle breeching. Especially, the saddle breeching of the No. 45 tomb of Jisandong Tombs was consisted by the parallel plaited cord which had got different colours for each. These straps formed a double-lined saddle breeching or a simple gridpatterned saddle breeching connected by the dome-shaped link, and the leaf-shaped or sword-shaped pendants were suspended at the end of straps. These materials belong to the first half of the 6th century, so in this period the new kind of a strap so-called the plaited cord was used in the saddle breeching, and the decorative feature was Maximized by weaving effect and contrast of colour of the plaited cord.
