이 글은 1990년대를 이해하기 위한 열쇠로 대중문화와 포스트모던적 진정성의 문제를 제시하고자 하였다. 1990년대에 대중문화란 당대 신자유주의 질서의 상징물로 인식되며 도덕적 입장에서 경계되거나 이데올로기적 차원에서의 새로운 전선으로 인식되기도 하였지만, 한편으로는 그간 한국 사회에서 지연되었던 전지구적 차원의 동시대적 감각을 환기하는 등 단선화되지 않는 복잡한 의미망 속에 놓여 있었다. 이와 관련하여 주목할 필요가 있는 것이 당대 비평장의 ‘진정성’ 개념이다. 당대 비평장에서 다루어진 진정성이란, 내면을 순결한 자기보존의 성소로서 간주하는 것이 아니라 내면에 일어나는 균열과 긴장, 모순된 목소리의 중첩을 관찰하고 그로부터 당대를 읽어내고자 하는 징후적 독해의 방법론이었다.
본고는 이 두 가지를 연결하기 위한 방법으로서 ‘문화적 인간’이라는 용어를 제안하였다. 그리고 문화적 인간의 내면을 진정성의 독법으로 살핌으로써, 문화적 기호에 담긴 당대 사회의 증상들을 펼쳐 보이고자 하였다. 이러한 작업을 수행하기 위해 장정일, 윤대녕, 김영하의 소설을 대상 텍스트로 삼았다. 이들 작품은 당대 문화 위에 놓여 있었던 압력과 욕망의 이중구조를 ‘문화적 인간’의 내면을 통해 보여 줌으로서 당대를 증상적으로 드러내고 있다. 또한 이들 ‘문화적 인간’들은 수행적 행위들을 통해 고정된 경계를 허물고 자기의 상을 현재적으로 창조하려고 하는데, 이는 주체의 해체라는 담론 이후 등장하는 포스트모더니즘적 진정성의 이상과 맞닿아 있다.
This paper attempted to present the issue of popular culture and postmodern authenticity as a key to understanding the 1990s. In the 1990s, popular culture was in a complex semantic network. Popular culture was recognized as a symbol of the capitalism and the new front line of ideology, but on the other hand, it was accepted as evoking a sense of contemporary characteristic that had been delayed in Korean society. In this regard, it is worth paying attention to the concept of 'authenticity' of the time. In the 1990s, the ideal of authenticity at critical era was not to seek sanctuary to preserve the inner world. It purposed to observe the cracks, tensions, and contradictory voices that occur inside, for reading the 1990s as a symptom.
This paper proposed the term "cultural human" as a way to connect these two. And by looking at the inside of cultural human beings through the reading method of authenticity, this paper tried to show the symptoms of the contemporary society contained in cultural symbols. In order to carry out this work, this paper looked at the novels of Jang Jeong-il, Yoon Dae-nyeong, and Kim Young-ha. These works symptomatically revealed the time by showing the dual structure of pressure and desire that lay on the culture of the time through the inner side of "cultural human". In addition, these "cultural humans" try to deconstruct fixed boundaries through performative actions and create their own identity in the present. This is in contact with the ideal of postmodern authenticity that emerges after the discourse of the deconstruction of subject.
