1991년 라타샤 할린스라는 이름의 흑인 십 대 소녀가 사우스 센트럴 로스앤젤레스에서 한인 리커 판매상 두순자로부터 총기로 살해당하는 사건이 발생했다. 이 사건은 한흑관계에 파국을 가져오기에 충분할 만큼 가연성이 높았다. 본 논문은 한인 언론과 로스앤젤레스 시 정부 및 카운티 정부 기록들을 검토함으로써 순진한 십 대 흑인 소녀가 고객을 존중하지 않는 한인 상인에 의해 숨졌다는 비난에 한인들이 어떻게 대응했는지를 분석한다. 이러한 분석은 한인들이 총기 사건이 야기한 비난으로부터 스스로를 방어하기 위해 미국의 인종 관계와 젠더를 둘러싼 담론들의 공간에서 어떻게 항행했었는지를 이해하게 도와준다. 특히 본 논문은 한인들의 공적 영역을 살펴봄으로써 한인들의 담론적 실천이 지니는 다층적 측면을 재구성했다. 한인들의 공적 영역에서 그들은 문화적 차이, 경찰 조작설, 언론의 선정주의 등의 언어를 통해 두순자-할린스 사건을 탈인종화함으로써 자신들을 무례하고 무자비한 상인들로 표상하려는 시도에 도전했다. 하지만 이와 동시에 한인들은 흑인들에 관한 도덕적·생물학적 편견들에 기초하는 짐 크로우식 혹은 그 이전의 인종 담론들을 동원함으로써 흑인 십 대 소녀를 재인종화했을 뿐만 아니라 그녀의 젠더를 뒤집기도 했다.

In 1991, a black teenage girl named Latasha Harlins was shot to death by Korean shopkeeper Soon Ja Du in her liquor market in South Central Los Angeles. The murder of the teenage girl was inflammable enough to provoke a catastrophic crisis between blacks and Koreans. Based on archival research of the Los Angeles city and county government records as well as Korean-language media, this study examines the discursive practices by which Korean Americans attempted to repudiate the charge that an innocent young black girl was killed by a disrespectful Korean merchant. It will help us understand how Korean Americans navigated the discursive terrain of American race and gender relations to defend themselves from the charge. In particular, this study tried to reconstruct the multivalence of Korean Americans’ discursive practices by incorporating an examination of the Korean American public sphere. In the public sphere, this study found that Korean Americans challenged their representation as disrespectful and ruthless ghetto merchants by deracializing Du’s shooting of Harlins through languages of cultural difference, police manipulation, and media sensationalism. At the same time, however, they reracialized the teenager and inverted her gender by employing discourses from the Jim Crow era and before which were rooted in a range of moral and biological stereotypes of blacks.
