이 논문의 목적은 미국 노예제 아래 흑인여성노예들이 어떤 방식으로 성폭력에 저항하며 생존했는지 고찰하는 것이다. 노예제 아래서 발생한 흑인여성노예에 대한 성폭행은 흑인여성의 섹슈얼리티에 대한 남부인의 전형적인 태도와 행동을 드러낼 뿐만 아니라 남부의 노예제를 이해하는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다. 백인남성은 흑인여성노예에 대한 성적 착취를 ‘흑인’과 ‘여성’ 모두를 복종시키기 위한 방편으로 이용했다. 이들은 흑인여성의 성적 착취를 통해 경제적 이익과 아울러 남자노예를 통제하는 심리적 이익까지 얻을 수 있었다. 나아가 노예제 아래서 백인여성이나 심지어 흑인남성노예마저 흑인여성에 대한 성적 착취를 방관하거나 이에 동조했다. 이들은 흑인여성의 고통을 못 본 척 하거나 때로 흑인여성에 대한 성적 착취에 적극 공모하기도 했다. 이러한 상황에서 흑인여성노예는 노예주로부터 가장 기본적인 인권을 지키기 위해 실로 다양한 저항 전략을 개발했다. 일부는 금욕, 낙태, 자식살해와 같은 방식으로 노예제 유지에 필수적인 재생산 역할을 거부했다. 다른 이들은 노예주나 감독관을 직접 살해하는 극단적인 방법을 선택하기도 했다. 이 모든 흑인여성들의 저항은 백인 남성의 성적 착취에 맞선 적극적인 항거로 볼 필요가 있다. 이들이 때로 타인의 목숨을 빼앗는 극단적인 선택을 하긴 했지만, 이것은 노예의 처지에서 명백히 주체적인 행동으로 이해되어야 한다. 이런 이유로 여자노예의 성적 착취에 대한 저항은 노예의 저항의 역사를 이해하는 데 필수적이다. 나아가 흑인여성노예의 다양한 저항전략은 ‘문자’를 통한 기록 수단을 갖지 못한 이들이 자신의 역사를 몸을 통해 드러낸 역사적 기록이기도 하다. 이들의 선택과 행동을 분석하고 해석하며 비로소 기록하는 작업은 지배집단이 주도해 기록한 기존의 흑인여성의 역사와는 전혀 다른 기록이요 역사일 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how African-American slave women attempted to avoid the sexual exploitation of white men under slavery in America. The sexual violence of enslaved female not only reveals the standard image and attitude of black female in the South but also gives significant clues in understanding Southern slavery. White men used the sexual exploitation of African-American slave women to control both blacks and women in south. The sexual exploitation of African-American slave women offered slave-holders both the psychological and economic benefits. Slavery forced white women and even black men to ignore the suffering of black women and conspire with white men in the sexual exploitation of enslaved female. A female slave resisted both the economic and sexual oppressions which were a part of her daily life. And enslaved women developed a variety of strategy to protect their rights of human being from slave-holders. Some refused the role of reproduction necessary to preserve slavery system by using means such as sexual abstinence, abortion, and child-murder. Others chose to kill their master and overseers. We need to understand these examples as evidences to reveal that enslaved females put up positive resistance to slavery system. The examination of the strategies that were developed by the female salve to resist sexual exploitation represents a legitimate and necessary area of inquiry if we are to understand slave resistance in general. Although some female slaves often took extreme measures, their choices need to be considered as positive resistance against sexual exploitation and an independent action in condition of slave. Female salves wrote their history on physical bodies, because they had no means to write their history under slavery. So the history of African-American slave women’s resistance to sexual assault was a document which they inscribed on their own bodies. Therefore the work that analyzes and interprets their choices and activities will be a different document and history from the established one.
