장례문화의 역사 속에서 화장의 흐름을 살펴보고, 그 가운데 승가의 다비가 어떻게 전개되어왔는지 다루었다. 화장의 역사는 자율적 수용(삼국～고려), 타율적 배척(조선), 타율적 수용(일제강점기), 자율적 배척(광복 후), 자율적 수용(근래)이라는 부침을 거듭하면서 세 차례의 수용과 두 차례의 배척이 있었다. 삼국시대에 불교와 함께 화장이 들어왔으나 오랫동안 승가에서는 매장이 주를 이루었다. 신라 후대인 9세기에 선종이 들어오면서 조사(祖師)가 입적하면 다비하여 유골을 부도에 모시는 관습이 정착되었고, 대부분 승려는 매장을 하였다. 다비가 승가의 장법으로 정착된 시기는 12세기에 들어와서이다. 이때도 유골을 다시 매장하는 이중장이 주를 이루고, 산골을 하는 비중도 살펴볼 수 있다. 조선시대에 들어와 백성의 화장을 제도적으로 금하는 가운데 승가의 다비는 꾸준히 전승되어왔다. 다비는 한국만의 독자적 법식을 갖춘 장법으로 선적 요소가 강한 특징을 지녔다. 문중마다 다른 전통 방식에 따라 다비를 행해왔으나, 점차 전승기반이 약화되고 표준화된 다비가 자리를 잡아가고 있다.

This study examines the flow of cremation in the history of funerary culture, and how it has been practiced by monks. The historical trend of cremation has gone through the ups and downs of voluntary acceptance(Three Kingdoms and Goryeo), heteronomous exclusion(Joseon Dynasty), heteronomous acceptance(Japanese Occupation), voluntary exclusion(post-liberation), and voluntary acceptance(recent times). Cremation was introduced with Buddhism during the Three Kingdoms period, but for a long time, burial was the predominant practice in the Sangha. With the introduction of Zen Buddhism in the 9th century, the practice of cremating Patriarch upon their death and enshrining their bones in stupa was established. Most other monks were buried. It wasn't until the 12th century that cremation became a Sangha practice. At this time, double burials were also common, and ashes were scattered. During the Joseon Dynasty, when cremation was institutionally prohibited for the people, it was steadily passed down in the Sangha. Buddhist cremation is a uniquely Korean form of funeral ritual with strong Zen Buddhist elements. Cremation has been done in different ways at different Buddhist cathedrals, but these traditions are eroding and standardised practices are taking their place.
