에코투어리즘은 관광자원으로서의 자연환경 보호와 관광의 성공으로 인한 지역경제 활성화를 성공적으로 양립시키기 위한 투어리즘의 한 형태라고 할 수 있다. 즉 자연 그 자체가 지역의 주요 관광지인 경우 다른 관광자원에 비해 훼손이나 피해에 대한 보호가 매우 중요하기 때문에, 에코투어리즘은 자연환경의 보호를 전제로 하면서도 지역의 종합적인 활성화를 함께 고려한 투어리즘인 것이다. 일본의 경우 1990년대부터 에코투어리즘이 자연유산을 지역의 관광자원으로 가지고 있는 지역의 활성화에 도움이 될 것으로 판단하고, 에코투어리즘의 법적인 제도 마련과 환경성을 중심으로 한 전국 규모의 추진을 지원해왔다. 본 연구에서는 에코투어리즘을 시행하고 있는 일본의 다양한 지역 중에서도 1993년 일본에서 최초로 유네스코 세계자연유산에 등재된 야쿠시마에 대해 중점적으로 고찰했다. 야쿠시마는 세계유산의 등재 이후 방문객의 급격한 증가로 인한 자연환경 훼손이 발생했고, 그것이 다시 관광객 방문에 악영향을 끼치는 등의 다양한 문제가 대두되었다. 결국 자연환경의 보호를 전제로 하면서도 관광자원으로서 경제적인 효과도 극대화할 수 있는 에코투어리즘은 야쿠시마 관광에 있어 중요한 키워드가 되었고, 야쿠시마의 에코투어리즘 추진 과정과 결과는 많은 시사점을 제공하고 있다.

Ecotourism can be said to be a form of tourism to successfully balance the protection of the natural environment as a tourism resource and the revitalization of the local economy due to the success of tourism. In other words, if nature itself is a major tourist destination in the region, protecting damage or damage is very important compared to other tourism resources, so ecotourism is a tourism that considers the comprehensive revitalization of the region while presupposing the protection of the natural environment. In the case of Japan, since the 1990s, ecotourism has been judged to help revitalize areas that have natural heritage as a local tourism resource, and has supported the establishment of a legal system for ecotourism and the nationwide promotion of environmentalism. This study focused on Yakushima, which was first listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage in Japan in 1993, among the various regions in Japan that implement ecotourism. Since Yakushima's registration as a World Heritage Site, various problems have emerged, such as damage to the natural environment caused by a rapid increase in visitors, and it has again adversely affected tourist visits. In the end, ecotourism, which can maximize economic effects as a tourism resource while preserving the natural environment, has become an important keyword in Yakushima tourism, and the process and results of Yakushima's ecotourism have many implications.
