본 연구는 2022년 제20대 대통령 선거에서 누가 그리고 왜 국민의힘 윤석열 후보를 지지하였는지를 분석한다. 이번 대선은 역대급 비호감 선거라 할 정도로 선거 과정에서 양 후보에 대한 네거티브 공세가 두드러졌고 따라서 유권자들은 두 명의 인기 없는 후보 중에서 한 명을 선택해야 하는 투표를 할 수밖에 없었다. 그 결과 국민의힘 윤석열 후보가 역대 대선 사상 가장 근소한 득표율 차로 더불어민주당의 이재명 후보를 이기고 당선되었다. 분석 결과에 따르면, 20~30대 청년 남성의 국민의힘 지지, 문재인 정부의 주요 정책들에 대한 부정적 평가, 그리고 이재명 후보에 대한 높은 비호감도가 윤석열 후보 선택에 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 흥미로운 점은 더불어민주당의 정당일체감을 가지고 있더라도 이재명 후보에 대한 비호감도가 상당히 큰 유권자의 경우에는 국민의힘의 윤석열 후보를 지지하였다는 점이다. 결과적으로 볼 때, 이번 20대 대통령 선거에서 유권자가 투표 선택을 하는 데 있어서 개인의 실리적 태도 및 회고적 평가도 중요하게 작용하였지만, 유권자가 후보자에게 느끼는 부정적 감정이 후보자에 대한 지지 및 선택에 큰 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 시사한다.

This study examines the driving factors behind the support for Yoon Suk-yeol, the candidate of the conservative People Power Party in the 2022 presidential election. In this election, voters had to choose between two candidates, both unpopular and tainted by allegations of corruption and impropriety. Consequently, Yoon Suk-yeol narrowly defeated the ruling Democratic Party’s Lee Jae-myung in an unprecedentedly close victory. According to our results, first, young male voters in their 20s and 30s significantly shifted from the Democratic Party to the People Power Party, primarily driven by their personal stakes. Second, negative evaluations of the Moon administration influenced voters to lean towards the opposition. Finally, the high unfavorability ratings for Lee Jae-myung played a pivotal role in bolstering support for the opposition. Interestingly, even traditional Democratic Party supporters shifted their support to the opposition, due to their strong aversion about Lee Jae-myung. Taken together, this study shows that voters’ interests, partisanship, and retrospective evaluations played crucial roles in their vote choices, but the prevailing negative emotions towards a candidate proved decisive, particularly when voters felt compelled to choose the “lesser of two evils”.
