2020년 한국일보 신춘문예에 당선되며 집필 활동을 시작한 소설가 신종원(1992-)은 ‘소리’와 ‘음향’이라는 요소를 작품에 적극적으로 활용하면서, 기존 문단에서 찾아볼 수 없었던 실험적 형식으로 주목받고 있다. 각종 청각적 주제에 천착해 있는 신종원의 작품들에서는 음성, 음표, 템포, 노이즈, 오디오 채널, 미디어 컨트롤 기호 등 디지털과 아날로그를 넘나드는 여러 가지 청각 요소들이 문자예술인 소설에 다양한 방식으로 활용된다.
이에 따라 본 연구에서 초점을 두고 분석하는 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기술의 발전과 함께 변화한 매체 환경 속에서 문자 예술인 문학은 소리와 음향을 어떤 방식으로 반영하고 활용하는가? 둘째, 문학에서 소리가 하나의 소재나 기법으로서 활용되는 것을 넘어, 문자 예술인 문학이 소리와 음향을 수용하고 향유하는 ‘매체’가 될 수 있는가? 본고에서는 이에 따라 신종원의 『전자 시대의 아리아』에 수록된 소설 여섯 편에 드러난 다양한 청각적 요소들의 표현 양상을 살펴본다. 이때 논의의 핵심은 수용자에게 소리 그 자체로서 도달하는 것을 목적하는 새로운 형식의 매체적 가능성으로, 이는 단지 문학적 효과를 두드러지게 하기 위해 활용된 ‘청각적 심상(이미지)’과는 구분된다. 그리고 이와 같은 신종원의 서술을 본고에서는 ‘소설의 음악화’, 또는 ‘텍스트의 소리화’로 명명하고자 한다.
Novelist Shin Jong-Won(1992-), who was elected to the Hankook Ilbo New Young Writers’ Prize in 2020, has been actively utilizing the elements of ‘sound’ and ‘audio’ in his works, attracting attention for his experimental forms that have not been found in conventional literature. In Shin’s works, which are steeped in various auditory themes, various auditory elements such as voice, notes, tempo, noise, audio channels, and media control symbols are utilized in various ways in the novel, which is a literary art that crosses digital and analog.
Accordingly, the focus of this study is to analyze the following. First, in what ways does literature, a literary art, reflect and utilize sound and acoustics in a media environment that has changed with the development of technology? Second, can literature, a literary art, become a ‘medium’ that accepts and enjoys sound and acoustics, beyond the use of sound as a material or technique in literature? In response, this paper examines the expression of various auditory elements in the six novels included in Shin Jongwon’s Aria of the Electronic Age. At the heart of the discussion is the possibility of a new form of medium that aims to reach the listener as sound itself, as distinct from the ‘auditory image’ that is utilized merely to accentuate literary effects. This new type of narrative will be referred to here as the ‘musicalization of the novel’ or the ‘sonification of the text’.
