본 연구는 구약의 역사기술방법에서 사용되는 내러티브 장르가 과연 역사적 진실을 담고 있으며 그래서 믿을만한 것인가라는 질문과 관련된 연구이다. 가다머와 리쾨르에 의하면 구약의 역사 내러티브는 내러티브 구조를 사용하여 인간의 시간과 행동을 상상력과 상징을 이용하여 의미있는 형태로 치환하고자 하는 행위로 규정한다. 더욱이 구약의 내러티브는 풀롯, 자료의 선택, 의도가 있는 묘사, 모티프와 핵심어의 반복 등과 같은 문학적 장치들을 사용한다. 이런 내러티브의 특성 때문에 많은 학자들은 구약의 역사를 내러티브로 기록할 때, 그 내러티브는 본질적으로 허구라고 주장해왔다. 하지만 내러티브에서 나레이터가 그러한 문학적 장치들을 사용하여 역사적 사간들의 의미들을 보여주려고 했다고 보는 것이 더 신빙성이 있다. 실제로 내러티브 안에서 문학적 기법들은 독자로 하여금 나레이터가 전달하고자하는 요점들을 파악할 수 있도록 도와준다. 그 결과 내러티브에서 수사적 구조를 포함한 문학적 장치들은 단순히 역사적 사건들에 첨가된 허구적 요소들이 아니라 나레이터가 역사적 사건들의 관계들을 드러내고 그 관계 안에서 드러나는 핵심적 사항들을 강조하는 도구이다. 이런 관찰들은 구약에서 역사 내러티브가 어떻게 작동하는지에 관한 두 가지 예를 고찰할 때 더욱 지지를 얻는다. 결론적으로 구약의 내러티브는 그것의 문학적 장치들과 함께 역사적으로 신뢰할 만한 내용을 담고 있다고 말할 수 있다.

This work has made a study about the question of whether narrative in Old Testament historiography is historically truthful and reliable. According to Gadamer and Ricoeur, the historical narrative of the Old Testament is an imaginative and figurative act which seeks to configure human time and action in a meaningful way with narrative structure. Furthemore, narrative in the Old Testament contains a lot of literary devices such as plot, selectivity, suggestive detail, repetition of motifs or key words, and so on. Because of this nature of narrativity, many scholars argued that the historical narrative of the Old Testament is fictional in nature. However, it is more plausible that the narrator uses such literary devices to show the significance of historical events. Indeed, literary techniques in narrative help the reader to grasp the main points which the narrator attempts to convey. Therefore, the literary devices of narrative including rhetorical structure are not simply a fictional addition to historical events, but a tool with which the narrator displays the relations of historical events and highlight the main points revealed in the relations. These observations have gained more credence from our treatment of two examples of how the historical narratives of the Old Testament work. In conclusion, narrative in Old Testament contains historically trustworthy sources with its literary structures.
