본 연구은 미셸 푸코(Michel Foucault, 1926~1984)의 헤테로토피아(Heterotopia) 개념을 바탕으로 로이드 뉴슨(Lloyd Newson, 1957~)의 댄스필름 작품인 「삶의 대가 The Cost of Living」(2004)를 살펴보았다. 뉴슨은 시각예술인 필름이라는 매체를 통해 춤의 경계를 확장시키고 현시대의 주요 논제인 인간관계에 관한 문제를 과감하게 표현한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 ‘구성된 현실의 정상성이라는 배치를 벗어난 헤테로토피아’의 의미를 바탕으로 뉴슨의 댄스필름에 나타나는 예술적 관념을 고찰하고, 이를 통해 동시대적 춤을 해석할 수 있는 미학적인 시각을 제안하고자 하였다. 또한 현실에 존재하는 유토피아이자 반(反)공간으로서의 헤테로토피아의 의미 안에서 「삶의 대가」를 분석함으로써 실재와 환상의 한계를 넘어서는 동시대 무용예술의 특성을 살피고 삶을 진취적으로 대면하는 주체의 의미를 논의하였다. 따라서 한계 너머의 자신을 새롭게 창조하기 위해 끊임없이 움직이는 자기변형의 힘을 춤 무대 안에서 발견할 수 있었다.

Based on Michel Foucault(1926-1984)'s concept of Heterotopia, this study examined Lloyd Newson(1957~)'s dance film work, The Cost of Living (2004). Newson expands the boundaries of dance through a medium called film, a visual artist, and boldly expresses the problem of human relations, a major topic of the present era. Accordingly, based on the meaning of ‘Heterotopia, a space beyond the arrangement of constructed reality’, this study attempted to examine the artistic concepts that appear in Newson's dance film and propose an aesthetic perspective to interpret contemporary dance. In addition, by analyzing the The Cost of Living within the meaning of heterotopia as a utopia and anti-space existing in reality, the characteristics of contemporary dance art beyond the limits of reality and fantasy were examined and the meaning of the subject who proactively confronts life was discussed. Therefore, the power of self-transformation that constantly moves to create a new self beyond the limit was found on the dance stage.
