본고는 최인훈의 희곡 <달아 달아 밝은 달아>를 <심청전>과 비교하여 작품에 형상화된 비합리적 세계의 양상을 규명하고, 합리성을 추구하는 개인의 의식과 합리성의 요구에 침묵하는 불합리의 세계 사이에서 탄생하는 ‘부조리’를 조명함으로써 작품이 가능하게 하는 사유의 영역을 탐색하고자 하였다. 심봉사와 뺑덕어미, 매파, 색주가의 손님, 해적 등 심청의 주변 인물들은 심청을 착취하는 욕망을 매개로 연쇄된다는 특징을 지니는데, 이를 통해 극대화되는 욕망의 파괴적 양상은 서사적 당위성을 결여하고 있다는 점에서 문제적이다. <심청전>은 인물의 인격적 도약과 서사적 보응의 구조를 통해 복선화음의 질서가 구축된다는 점에서 이상적이고 합리적인 세계를 그린다. 반면 <달아 달아 밝은 달아>는 인격적 변화가 부재한 고착화된 인물 형상과 도덕적 인과가 부재한 서사구조를 취함으로써, 도덕적 인과율이 작동하지 않는 불합리한 세계를 형상화하고 있다. 작품에 나타난 불합리의 세계와 <심청전>의 합리적 세계 사이의 간극을 응시하고 심청의 환상과 심청이 경험한 사실 사이의 절연 상태를 인지하는 가운데, 수용자는 인간의 호소와 세계의 비합리적 침묵이 대면할 때 탄생하는 부조리의 감정을 경험하게 된다. 그런데 <달아 달아 밝은 달아>는 환상이라는 도약 작용을 통해 부조리를 해소해버리는 한 인간의 모습을 그려냄으로써, 역설적으로 심청과 그의 삶 사이에 존재하는 부조리가 정신적 비약으로 빠지지 않을 수 없을 만큼 가혹하고 불가해한 것임을 드러내고, 합리성을 추구하는 인간의 의식에 끝내 침묵한다. <달아 달아 밝은 달아>는 도덕적 인과법칙의 지배를 받지 않는 세계와 합리성을 추구하는 인간의 지향 사이에서 탄생하는 부조리를 인지하게 하고 부조리에 대한 응시와 직면의 어려움을 깨닫게 하며 부조리에 대한 감각과 사고를 이끌어낸다는 점에서 형이상학적 사유의 장으로서 의의를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

By comparing Choi In-hoon’s play Dear Moon Dear Moon Bright Dear Moon with Simcheongjeon, this study aim to identify the aspect of the irrational world embodied in the work and to explore the realm of “absurdity” that arises between the pursuit of individual consciousness towards rationality and the irrational world that remains silent in the face of rational demands. The characters surrounding Simcheong are characterized by a series of desires that exploit her, and the destructive aspect of this magnified desire poses a lack of narrative justification. Simcheongjeon depicts an ideal and rational world through the structure of characters’ personal growth and narrative rewards, establishing a punitive justice. On the other hand, Dear Moon Dear Moon Bright Dear Moon embodies an irrational world where moral causality does not operate effectively by taking the shape of a fixed character without personal change and a narrative structure without moral causality. Amidst contemplating the divide between the irrational world portrayed in Dear Moon Dear Moon Bright Dear Moon and the rational realm of Simcheongjeon and recognizing the state of isolation between Simcheong’s illusion and her experienced reality, the audience comes to experience the emotion of absurdity that emerges when human appeals meet the irrational silence of the world. However, Dear Moon Dear Moon Bright Dear Moon paradoxically depicts a human figure who resolves absurdity through the leap of an illusion, thereby revealing the inherent harshness and insurmountable nature of the absurdity existing between Simcheong and his life. This is ultimately silenced by human consciousness in pursuit of rationality. Dear Moon Dear Moon Bright Dear Moon serves as a metaphysical realm of thought by making one aware of the absurdity born between a world not governed by moral causality and the human inclination for rational pursuits. It leads to an acknowledgment of the challenge of facing and confronting absurdity, guiding the senses and thoughts towards the perception of absurdity, and thus holds significance as a venue for metaphysical contemplation.
