변변치 않은 학문 여정을 소개하게 되어 영광이지만 부끄럽기 그지 없습니다. C.S. Lewis는 Learning in Wartime에 제가 공부하는 이유를 잘 설명합니다. 하나님께서 주신 은사를 개발해 그의 영광을 돌림과 동료 그리스도인을 섬기는 일입니다. 그 소명을 따라 개혁주의 학문의 여정을 걸었습니다. 한국에서 미국, 다시 네덜란드, 그리고 캐나다와 미국 생활이 모두 15년이었습니다. 가장 주된 관심은 문화에 대한 기독교적 이해였습니다. 그 관심을 중심으로 기독교 세계관, 문화 연구, 기독교철학과 변증학, 기독교 예술 이론, 그리고 철학적 해석학을 공부해왔습니다. 그 이면에는 교회와 더불어 세 기구에서의 봉사가 제게는 동기를 주었습니다. 시민운동단체인 (사단법인)기독교윤리실천운동과 기독교 학술단체인 (사단법인)기독교세계관학술동역회, 그리고 아트미션이라는 공동체입니다. 총신대학교에서의 25년 교육의 기회도 철학과 문화 연구의 기회이자 교육을 통한 소중한 섬김의 장이었습니다. 교회와 총신대학, 그리고 이 두 단체는 학문만 아니라 삶을 나눌 수 있는 신앙의 공동체였습니다. 이들 공동체로부터 받은 사랑과 격려가 제 학문 여정의 동기였고 이들을 섬김이 공부하는 의미와 보람이었습니다. 이 모든 것을 선물로 주셔서 학문적 섬김에 사용한 것은 오직 하나님의 은혜였음을 고백합니다. 주님의 나라가 이 땅에 온전히 임하기까지 그의 영광과 형제 섬김의 은총이 더욱 넘치기를 소망합니다. 저의 신앙과 학문 여정에 대해 말하게 된 영광스러운 기회입니다. 더욱이 은사이신 손봉호 선생님과 존경하는 김영한 선생님, 강영안 선생님, 그리고 최태연 선생님과 자리를 함께하게 되어 외람된 송구한 자리가 아닐 수 없습니다. 오늘 함께 하는 모든 분께 많이 배우겠습니다.

It is a great honor to share my humble academic journey. C.S. Lewis once very succinctly explained why I study in his sermon, “Learning in Wartime.” Developing God-given gifts for the purpose of glorifying Him and serving fellow Christians. Following that calling and vision, I pursue the path of Reformed scholarship. It was a long journey of 15 years, in Korea, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada. The main interest in my study has always been in culture, especially the Christian understanding of culture. Based on that interest, I have studied Christian worldview, cultural studies, Christian philosophy and apologetics, Christian art theory, and philosophical hermeneutics. Behind my academic journey was the Christian Ethics Movement and the Christian Worldview Association, and Art mission along with the church. Of course, Chongshin University has been my spiritual home for more than 50 years since 1970. These organizations and institutions were a community of faith that could share life as well as study. The love and encouragement I received from these communities motivated my academic journey, and serving them was meaningful and rewarding to study. I gratefully confess that it was the grace of God that gave me all of this as a gift. I pray that the glory of the Lord and the grace of serving sisters and brothers in Jesus Christ will overflow even more until the kingdom of the Lord comes fully to this earth.
