영화교육의 초창기에 연극교육과 영화교육은 분리되지 않은 채 하나의 학과에 편제되어 통합교육이 이루어졌다. 이러한 교육 형태는 1990년대 중반 이후 큰 변화를 겪게 되는데, 이는 90년대 이후 한국영화산업의 비약적 발전과 깊은 관련성이 있다. 영화의 산업적 가능성이 열림과 동시에 프로듀서 시스템이 자리를 잡아가며 이전과 달리 제작시스템이 체계화되면서 교육기관의 관심이 집중되었고 이에 따라 영화를 교육하는 대학의 수는 전국적으로 매우 빠르게 늘어났다. 이 추세를 반영하듯 기존에 연극영화과를 설치하고 있던 중앙대, 동국대 등에서 연극교육과 영화교육을 분리하기에 이른다. 이에 따라 연극영화과 혹은 연극영화학부라는 전통적인 학부(과) 체계가 급변하면서 연극전공과 영화전공을 구별하여 각자의 교과과정을 구축하거나, 처음부터 연극과/영화과 혹은 연기과/영화과로 나누어 독립된 학과를 설치하는 학교들이 생겨났다. 각 대학들은 영화전공, 영화영상전공, 영화과, 영화예술학과, 영화영상학과 등의 이름으로 편제하여 영화교육을 시행하였고, 내부적 사정에 따라 연극은 무용이나 뮤지컬과 함께 무대예술교육으로 묶이고, 영화는 애니메이션이나 방송과 함께 통합하여 영상예술교육의 형태로 묶이는 등, 전통적인 이름으로 존재해온 ‘연극영화과’는 다양한 분화의 과정을 거치게 된다. 이러한 과정 중, 여러 가지 이유에 의해 연기교육은 주로 연극과에서 전담하게 되고, 영화과에서는 제작과 관련된 교과목을 개설하여 교육하기에 이른다. 그러나 영화기술의 발전, 가령 카메라 기술과 각종 그립장비(grip equipments) 등의 비약적 변화, 음향/녹음 기술의 성장, CG와 VFX 기술의 혁명적 성장 등에 의해 더 이상 연극분야에서의 연기교육이 카메라 연기의 모든 부분을 커버하기에 한계를 드러낼 수밖에 없게 되었다. 그뿐 아니라 각각의 고유한 매체적 특성에 따라 달라지는 연기술의 차이를 인정하지 않을 도리 또한 없다. 또한 대학에서의 영화교육에서 연기교육을 결여할 때 생기는 다양한 문제들 역시 더 이상 간과할 수 없는 영화 교수자들의 고민이 되었다. 영화제작교육을 진행하다 보면 연출전공 학생들에게 출연 배우들에 대한 연기세공 능력이 매우 부족하다는 사실을 빈번하게 경험하게 된다. 단편영화를 연출할 때, 연출자가 오롯이 배우의 연기력에 백퍼센트 의존하여 그저 그들이 연기하는대로 지켜보고나서 대사를 틀리거나 더듬지 않으면 그냥 ‘오케이!’를 외쳐버리는 일이 비일비재하다. 이러한 현실에서 영화과의 가장 중요한 교육 중 하나인 연출교육이 제대로 이루어지는 것을 기대하기란 매우 어렵다. 이에 본 연구는 영화관련 전공을 설치한 전국 대학들의 영화교육과정을 토대로, 교과목 현황과 연기교육의 반영 정도를 분석하고, 그 필요성에 대해 근거를 통해 설명한 후 대안을 제시할 것이다.
In the early days of film education, theater and film were not separated but bound to one department, and integrated education was provided. Then, it has undergone a major change since the mid-1990s, which is very related to the rapid development of Korean films since the 1990s. As the industrial possibilities of film opened and the producer system took over, the number of universities educating film across the country increased exponentially as the production system was systematized unlike before. Moreover, Chung-Ang University and Dongguk University, which previously established theater and film departments, also separated theater education and film education. Accordingly, theater majors and film majors were distinguished in the Department of Theater and Film, and schools were established to establish independent departments such as theater/film departments or acting/film departments from the beginning. Film education was named by various names such as film major, film major, film major, film department, and film art department, and depending on the internal circumstances of each university, plays are grouped with dance or musicals, and movies are taught with animation or broadcasting. During this process, acting education is mainly dedicated to the theater department for various reasons, and the film department opens and educates subjects related to production. However, it is undeniable that acting education in the theater field no longer covers all parts of camera acting due to the development of film technology, rapid development of camera technology and grip equipment, sound/recording technology, and revolutionary changes in CG and VFX technology. In addition, various problems arising from the lack of acting education in film education in universities are also long-standing concerns of film professors. For this reason, there is also a frequent problem that acting skills are not achieved at all in students majoring in directing. When directing a short film, it is common for the director to rely entirely on the actor's acting skills to watch as they act and shout "Okay!" if they do not miss their lines or stutter. In this situation, it is very difficult to expect that directing education, the most important education of the film department, will be properly carried out. Therefore, this study will analyze the current status and the necessity of acting education based on the film curriculum of universities across the country and suggest alternatives.
