본고의 목적은 19세기의 대표적인 시조 작가인 안민영과 이세보가 창작한 애정시조의 미적 특징을 비교 고찰하는 것이다. 먼저 안민영과 이세보 시조의 표현 방식과 수사적 지향을 분석한 뒤, 애정시조에 나타난 주체의 성격 및 관계 인식에 대해 논하였다. 이를 통해 두 작가의 애정시조를 심도 있게 이해하면서, 그간 감상성 내지 통속적 경향 등으로 범박하게 파악되어 왔던 19세기 애정시조의 양상을 구체화할 수 있는 초석을 마련하고자 하였다. 안민영의 애정시조는 고정된 현재 속에서 주체가 포착한 대상을 감각적으로 묘사하는 묘사시의 특징을 지닌 반면, 이세보의 애정시조는 시간의 흐름에 따른 주체의 감정 굴곡과 행위 변화를 연속적으로 제시하는 서술시의 특징을 지니고 있다. 한편, 안민영 시조의 주체는 상대의 마음이 자신의 것과 일치한다는 확신 위에서 타인을 旣知의 대상으로 간주하고 있다. 이에 따라 타인의 내면에 관심을 기울이기보다 자기 상태를 드러내거나 자신이 감각한 대상을 표현하는 데 주력하는 양상을 보여준다. 이와 달리 이세보 시조의 주체는 타인의 마음을 온전히 이해하는 것이 불가능하다는 전제 위에서 타인을 未知의 대상으로 간주하고 있다. 이에 따라 자신의 상태보다 상대의 내면에 각별한 관심을 기울이면서, 서로의 마음을 알 수 없기에 발생할 수밖에 없는 감정의 굴곡과 관계에 대한 불안을 주로 형상화하고 있다. 이처럼 안민영과 이세보의 애정시조는 상이한 인식론적 기반을 토대로 각자의 개성을 구축하였던바, 19세기 애정시조의 존재 양상과 미의식의 다양성을 시사한다. 이상, 본고의 논의는 안민영과 이세보 각자의 작품세계 내에서 핵심적인 영역으로 간주되어 온 애정시조에 관한 이해를 심화하는 한편으로, 19세기 애정시조의 다채로운 국면과 미의식을 재조명하기 위한 하나의 試論으로서 의미를 지닌다.

This study compares and examines the aesthetic characteristics of love sijo by Ahn Min-yeong and Lee Sebo, representative poets of the 19th century. Specifically, this study analyzes the expression methods of Ahn Min-yeong's love sijo and Lee Sebo's love sijo, then examines the nature and perception of their poetic subject. First, Ahn Min-yeong's sijo has the characteristics of a "descriptive poem" that details the object sensed by the poetic subject. However, Lee Sebo's love sijo has characteristics of a "narrative poem" that presents changes in emotions and behavior over time. Second, the poetic subject of Ahn Min-yeong's sijo considers the beloved an "already known" object and focuses on aesthetically describing their perspective rather than the other person's. In contrast, the poetic subject of Lee Sebo's sijo considers the beloved a "continuously unknown" object, mainly expressing various emotions and anxiety caused by the inability to understand the other person’s perspective. As such, differences in Ahn Min-yeong and Lee Sebo's love sijo show that the aesthetic characteristics of love sijo in the 19th century were diverse. As a result, this paper is meaningful in deepening scholarly understanding of Ahn Min-yeong's and Lee Sebo's love sijo and revealing various characteristics of 19th-century love sijo.
