This paper explored the reality of women who appeared in the diaries of Muban Noh Sang-chu (1746-1829) in Seonsan, Gyeongsang-do. Historical analysis indicates that the chul-ga-oei-in (出嫁外人) ideology, which considers women as an outsider after marriage, was not strictly applied in the Noh family. Noh’s daughters visited their parents' house after marriage while sons-in-law kept close ties with the wives’ family, i.e., bringing news and traveling to and from their in-law’s house. The diary demonstrates that when a daughter is sick, her father would get a medicine prescribed for her or takes her home for recovery. Noh’s diary shows that women in his family visited their parents’ home, depicted daily lives of Noh’s aunt, younger sister, daughter, sister-in-law, nephew’s daughter-in-law, and grandmother. Noh’s sister visited her parents’ house particularly often and stayed for a long time once she visited. Her autonomy to freely visit parents was possible since she was not the eldest daughter-in-law in her husband’s family. In addition, it is also fair to assume that she managed her father’s inheritances or was actively engaged in occasions at her parents’ house. This study reveals that women interacted with their parents even after marriage in the late Chosun Dynasty. In particular, the study conveys that son-in-law’s visit to wife’s family should be regarded as women’s visiting her parents’ house in a broader perspective. It has been revealed that women not only received support from their parents, but also played an independent role in their parents' home as an aunt, daughter, and younger sister. This study, which aims to reveal the reality of women as its specific role in relationships with relatives, holds significance in presenting alternative explanations to existing male and paternal oriented studies.
