이 글은 검열 사례 연구의 활성화를 위해 검열의 판독 문제를 제기하였다. 즉 1930년대 대표적 미디어인 『동아일보』와 『신동아』의 검열 사례들을 바탕으로, 검열 판독의 지침을 제시하고자 하였다. ‘검열의 판독’이 모든 검열 연구의 출발점이라는 데 이의를 제기할 사람은 많지 않겠지만 막상 잡지나 신문을 넘기면서 검열 사례들을 변별하는 데 필요한 판독 지침을 남긴 연구는 그리 많지 않기 때문이다. 『신동아』의 검열 판독은 원고 검열기(1~24호)와 교정쇄 검열기(25~59호)를 변별해 다루었고, 『동아일보』의 검열 판독은 어떤 흔적이 ‘검열당한 것이 아닌지’에 방점을 두고 기술했으며, 또 검열 여부를 판단하기 어려운 사례들도 덧보태 제시하였다. 『동아일보』와 『신동아』가 1930년대 미디어사에서 차지하는 지위와 위상을 염두에 둘 때, 이 글이 제시한 판독 지침은 다른 미디어들의 검열 판독에도 적잖이 도움을 주리라 기대한다. 아울러 이런 판독 작업이 활성화되고 그 성과가 축적되면, 조선총독부가 산출한 부정확한 검열 통계들도 바로잡을 수 있으리라 믿는다.

This article raised the problem of reading censorship to revitalize censorship case studies. In other words, based on the censorship cases of the DongAIlbo and ShinDongA, representative media in the 1930s, we tried to present guidelines for censorship reading. There will not be many people who will give significance that “reading censorship” is the starting point for all censorship studies, but not many studies have left reading guidelines necessary to distinguish censorship cases by handing over magazines or newspapers. ShinDongah’s censorship reading distinguished the Plaintiff censors (No. 1~24) and proofreading censors (No. 25~59), and the DongAIlbo’s censorship reading focused on which traces were not “censored”, and also presented cases that were difficult to determine whether they were censored. Considering the status and status of DongAIlbo and ShinDongA in media history in the 1930s, it is expected that the reading guidelines presented by this article will help other media to read censorship. In addition, I believe that if such reading work is activated and its results are accumulated, inaccurate censorship statistics calculated by the Governor-General of Korea can be corrected.
