이 연구는 한글학자 신명균이 『신소년』에 발표한 역사 · 과학 이야기의 제재, 구성, 담화방식을 분석하여 그의 어린이를 위한 스토리텔링의 문학사적 의의를 고찰하였다. 먼저 제재는 시의성 있게 채택하였다. 역사 이야기는 주로 나라가 어지러울 때 지조와 절개를 지킨 역사적 인물을, 과학 이야기는 잡지가 발간되는 때의 자연 현상과 근대적 지식 형성에 이바지하는 것을 제재로 삼았다. 구성은 주로 설명 대상의 핵심 정보에 관련 일화를 삽입하는 방식을 취하고 있다. 역사 이야기는 주로 인물의 어린 시절 일화를, 과학 이야기는 설명 대상과 관련된 다른 나라 일화를 소개하였다. 담화 방식은 계몽적 목소리와 근대적 문체의 특징을 보인다. 공통적으로 작자 서술자의 권위적 목소리로 경어체를 사용하여 구연체 서술을 하고 근대적 문체를 사용한다. 한자를 거의 쓰지 않고, 띄어쓰기를 비교적 일관되게 하며 입말을 살려 쓴다. 이러한 스토리텔링은 현대 학습동화에서 주로 쓰이는 방식이지만, 당시에는 새로 개척되는 방식으로서 다른 작가들의 서술 방식과 차이가 있다. 요컨대 신명균의 어린이를 위한 역사 · 과학 이야기는 어린이 초점의 근대적 교술 이야기로서 그 선구적 의의가 있다. 이 연구는 신명균의 문학작품에 대한 본격적인 연구이자, 한국 에듀테인먼트 스토리텔링의 기원을 밝히는 창의적인 연구라는 점에서 그 의의가 크다.

This study examined the significance of his storytelling for children in the history of the Korean Literature by analyzing the topic, composition, and discourse method of historical and scientific stories published in < Shinsonyeon >, by Shin Myung-kyun, Han-gul scholar. First, timely topics were adopted. Historical stories were mainly about historical figures who kept their principles and constancy in times of political turmoil in the country, and scientific stories were about natural phenomena and the formation of modern knowledge of the time. Second, it took the composition of inserting anecdotes into informative stories. Historical stories mainly introduced childhood anecdotes of characters, and scientific stories introduced anecdotes from other countries related to the subject of explanation. Finally, it shows an enlightening voice and a modern style as a discourse method. In common, it uses colloquial description and modern style by way of the honorifics in an author’s or a narrator’s voice that seems like a sovereign voice. It rarely uses Chinese characters, makes the spacing relatively consistent, and uses the spoken words. The method of this storytelling is mainly used in contemporary educational story for children, but at that time, it was a pioneering work and was different from the other writers’ narrative method of the time In summary, Shin Myung-kyun’s history and science story for children is a modern didactic story focused on children and has a pioneering significance. This study is significant in that it is a full-fledged study of Shin Myung-kyun’s literary works and a creative study that reveals the origin of Korean edutainment storytelling.
