An Analysis of the Factors Affecting the Consumption of Home Meal Replacement and Eating Out

The objective of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the consumption of individual household for HMR(Home Meal Replacement) and eating out considering an interrelationship between them. In particular, this study focused on the consumption behavior of single-person household, dual-income household, household with adolescent. This paper also tried to shed some light on the effects of people’s interest in health and the relationship between HMR purchase and eating out. This study used ‘The Consumer Behavior Survey for Food’ data from 2017 to 2018, and conducted an ordered probit analysis by using 3,985 individual households data. The results of our analysis shows that single-person households tend to consume more both HMR and eating out. The households with adolescent consume more HMR, while they are less likely to eat out. People’s interest in health seems to negatively related with HMR consumption, while the effect of interest in health on eating out behavior is not significant. Finally, the more they eat out in Korean traditional cousin restaurants and use delivery or takeout services, the higher rate of HMR is.
