<수륙문답>은 토끼와 주부의 대화로 용궁과 육지를 묘사한다. 토끼와 주부의 입을 통해 육지와 바다의 모습이 기술되고 있다는 점에 착안하여 <수륙문답>에 나타나는 육지와 바다의 공간성을 읽어내고자 하였다. 분석을 위해 장소에 의미를 더해 개념화한 유토피아와 반유토피아, 디스토피아 개념을 적용해 보았다. 토끼가 묘사하는 육지의 유토피아는 산중에 한정되는 것을 알 수 있었는데 산은 토끼가 육지에서 인재로 채택 받지 못해 숨어 들어온 곳이 되어 온전한 유토피아의 모습을 보이지는 못하였다. 이는 주부가 묘사하는 위험이 도사리는 곳으로서의 산으로 이어져 유토피아가 결여된 곳으로의 반유토피아적 모습으로 해석될 수 있었다. 용궁에도 유토피아적 모습과 반유토피아적 모습이 겹쳐 나타났다. 화려하게 장식된 용궁은 토끼가 이르고자 하는 이상적인 곳으로써의 유토피아가 되어 놓인 반면에 용궁의 약을 구하러 올려보낼 만한 인재는 없는 유토피아적 엄정한 질서가 부재한다는 점에서 반유토피아적 장소로 배치되어 있었다. 용궁과 육지에 관한 묘사에서는 유토피아와 반유토피아가 겹쳐 새로운 공간성을 빚어내는 것을 볼 수 있었다면 토끼가 용궁으로 들어가서 용궁을 탈출하는 서사에서는 이상적 공간이 목숨을 위협하는 곳으로 변모하여 희망을 지우고 절망이 깃들게 하는 파괴적 디스토피아를 읽어내었다. 이후 이 연구 내용을 발전시켜 <토끼전>의 최근 이본까지 적용, 장소에 대한 시각이 어떻게 변화하고 있으며 통시적 측면에서 어떻게 여기에서 공간성을 읽어낼 수 있는지를 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.

This paper aimed to determine characteristics of the underwater palace of the Dragon King and the land, paying attention to the fact that Suryukmundap described the underwater palace of the Dragon King in detail through conversation between a rabbit and a terrapin. To this end, concepts of utopia, anti-utopia, and dystopia, which were conceptualized by adding meaning to Topia, were applied. It could be seen that the land described by a rabbit was limited to the mountain. The mountain was not a complete utopia as it became a place where rabbits hid in because he was not accepted on land regardless of his ability. This led a mountain to the place of anti-utopia, just like a terrapin described. Utopia and anti-utopia also overlapped in underwater palace of the Dragon King. While the splendidly decorated dragon palace became a utopia as an ideal place for a rabbit to reach, it could also be described as an anti-utopian place without competent officials to send up to get medicine for the dragon king. Utopia and anti-utopia were overlapped in the description of the dragon palace and land. As the rabbit was in danger only because his liver was needed for the dragon king's life, destructive dystopia could be read in underwater palace of the Dragon King according to the story that the dragon king tried to kill the rabbit only for his life. The ideal space of underwater palace of the Dragon King was transformed into a life-threatening place, erasing hope and adding despair. It could be also read in the contemporary versions of Tokkijeon.
