Yun Ch’i-ho studied in Japan, China, and the United States for about ten years. During this period, this period, he came to contact progressive thought, acquired modern western learning, and became a Christian. He thought a civilized, democratic, and Christian society as the direction of reform in Korea. He had a strong anti-Chinese sentiment and considered China as an obstacle to the independence and reform of Korea. And he regarded the United States as a civilized, democratic, and Christian society, but he also criticized its racial discrimination. Meanwhile, he regarded Japan as a civilized country, and he tried to reform Korea taking Japan's rapid reform as a model. He also had a pro-Russian sentiment and regarded Russia as a civilized country in the East. Therefore, he had once expected that Korea would be reformed under the interference of Japan or Russia, when leaving thought that Korea could not be free from China and could not reform itself. But Yun though the Sino-Japanese War(1894~1895) as a war of aggression to Korea. And after having experienced Japanese interference during ‘the Kabo-Reform’ and Russian interference after ‘Agwanpachun', he came to believe that it would be undesirable for Korea to reform under the foreign interference. Eventually, he came to have a strong anti-Japanese sentiment because of ‘the Ulmi-Incident' that Japanese murdered Korean queen cruelly. Accordingly, as the president of the Independence Club, he led a reform movement through the people’s power. Yun also thought the Russo-Japanese War(1904~1905) as a war of aggression to Korea and Manchuria. Then, he showed a strong anti-Russian sentiment in his racial stand and an anti-Japanese sentiment in his national stand. But he thought that Korea lost her independence not only by the Japanese aggression, but also the lack of national capability. Therefore, he did not endorse the Righteous Armies' military actions against the Japanese, and led the Self-Strengthening Movement of Korea.
