A Study of Korean Organization at the 1920's in Shen Yang(Feng Tian)-Concerning the Establish and Act of Feng Tian Chosun Resident Associantion(奉天居留朝鮮人會)-
김주용 ( Kim Joo Yong )

This thesis examines the Korean immigration and control of Korean residents by imperialist Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, by surveying a Korean town in Feng Tian Chosun Resident Associantion(奉天居留朝鮮人會). It also examines how the construction of An-Feng railroad caused an increase in the number of immigrants and facilitated the urbanization of Shen Yang to understand the situation of Korean people who lived in Shen Yang at that time. I intended to examine the actualization of the Unification of Korean and Manchurian(鮮滿一體化), the Korean immigration, and routes to cities taken by immigrants. Especially, I observed the scope of Korean communities mainly established by imperialist Japan. Key aspects of this analysis can be summarized as follows. First, most of the Korean immigrants to Shen Yang were farmers who inhabited in the outskirts of the city. But afterward, they moved into the city and lived in Shi jian fang, Xi ta. The place of residence determined the type of occupation. So, most urban residents were merchants, industrialists, or laborers, while most suburban residents were farmers. It is characteristic of Korean immigrants to Shen Yang that they resided in Xi ta near the train station and constituted a unique community through a ceaseless assembling and separating process. But, in the 1910s and 1920s, the status of Korean immigrants in Shen Yang was unstable because of political fluctuations in Manchuria, which imperialist Japan used to control the Koreans. Second, Korean immigrants in Shen Yang were not independent from the influence of Japanese imperialism. Quasi-communities under the influence of Japanese consuls, such as Feng Tian Chosun Resident Associantion(奉天居留朝鮮人會)-, were established, increasing their dominance over the Korean society by playing on the poor economic strength of Korean immigrants. Since Shen Yang was the center of Liao Ning Sheng, the influence of Japanese Imperialism could not but keep increasing. Some Korean immigrants were forced an isolation” instead of voluntary immigration, according to the amount of subsidies and the intensity of control. In other words, a new paradigm of life was being decided by the influencing power of Japanese Imperialism. At the same time, Korean immigrants recognized it as a safety device for them. Third, there are questions related to pro-Japanese collaboration, anti-Japanese patriotism, and the absoluteness of survival. Korean immigrants in Shen Yang faced various kinds of temptation in the process of their settlement. In most cases, however, they were not be able to decide the residential environment; it was decided by Chinese and Japanese organizations. Korean immigrants who joined communities like Feng Tian Chosun Resident Associantion(奉天居留朝鮮人會)- could lead more stable lives. However, some of them had to be stigmatized as pro-Japanese groups. But, the most important thing is the absoluteness of survival of Korean immigrants. If we discuss the Korean immigrants’ society without considering the absoluteness of survival, it will be an analysis excessively based on the present situation.
