이 연구의 목적은 만주국의 황도낙토 구상과 종교의 관련성을 검토하는 데에 있다. 필자는 만주국 정부 관리들이 국가의 이데올로기를 창출하고 확장하는 과정에서 어떻게 특정 종교를 활용하였는지를 해명하고자 하였다. 특히 그 과정에서 만주국이 특정 종교 행위를 의례로 선택하고 활용하는 의례화의 전략과 실천에 주목하였다. 이를 위해 제2장(만주국 건국이념의 이중주)에서는 왕도낙토와 유교, 황도낙토와 신도의 관련성을 논리적이고 실천적인 측면에서 파악하였다. 그리고 양자의 차이에 주목하여, 만주국에서 왕도주의와 황도주의가 하나가 아니라 두 가지 선율로 연주되었음을 밝혔다. 제3장(황도낙토론과 신도)에서는 만주국 정부 관리들이 신도에 근거한 황도낙토론을 창출하는 과정을 검토하였다. 이 과정에서 만주국의 의례화의 전략과 실천에 주목하였다. 그리고 제4장에서는 협력과 저항의 틀을 통해 황도낙토론에 대한 다른 종교들의 반응과 실천, 그리고 그 이유에 대해 검토하였다. 만주국의 이데올로기에 대한 최근 연구에서는 유교에 근거한 왕도주의가 신도에 근거한 황도주의로 전환되었다는 주장이 지지를 받고 있다. 실제로 만주국정부는 건국 초기에 왕도낙토 구상을 위해 유교를 국교화하였고, 부의의 제1차 일본 방문 이후 왕도낙토와 황도낙토의 연결 담론에 참여하였다. 이러한 담론은 제국주의 상황, ‘왕도정치’와 ‘일만불가분 일덕일심’의 실현이라는 정치원리, 그리고 만주국정부 인사들의 성분을 고려할 때 예상 가능한 것이었다. 그렇지만 필자는 만주국의 두 이데올로기와 그 근거인 두 종교들 사이의 균열에 주목하였다. 그리고 1940년대에도 왕도국가 또는 왕도낙토라는 개념이 각종 언론을 통해 만주국 사회에서 유통되었다는 점에 주목했다. 이를 통해 필자는 왕도낙토 구상이 황도낙토 구상으로 단순 선회한 것이 아니라는, 즉 만주국의 이데올로기가 왕도주의에서 황도주의로 전환된 것이 아니라 양자가 함께 연주되었음을 주장하였다. 이는 만주국이 건국되어 폐망하기까지 단순히 ‘괴뢰국’으로만 존재한 것이 아니라는 예상을 가능하게 한다. 물론 이중주에서 선율의 강약은 존재했으며, 특히 중일전쟁 이후에 왕도주의의 선율은 희미해졌다. 그렇지만 왕도주의가 건국 초기에 만주국의 독립 의지와 연결되었다는 점 등을 고려할 때 이러한 관점은 만주국 상황을 좀 더 역동적으로 연구하는 데에 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.

The purpose of this research is to investigate relationship between religion and national and ideological construction(Hwangdo-nakto) in Mancuokuo. Through the process of this research, I tried to find out how high-ranking government officials in Manchukuo utilized specific religions in process to create and to extend their national ideologies. To achieve these purposes, in chapter 2, in the title of ‘duet of spirits of the national foundation in Manchukuo’ I reviewed differences as well as similarities between Wangdo ideology and Hwangdo ideology which were national ideologies in Manchukuo. The one was relating to Confucianism, and the other was relating to Shintoism. Then I pointed out that two ideologies in Manchukuo was played as duet. In chapter 3, in the title of ‘Shintoism and Hwangdo-nakto ideology’, I reviewed process that high-ranking government officials in Manchukuo create Hwangdo-nakto ideology, relating to Shintoism. In chapter 4, in the title of ‘religion and Hwangdo-nakto ideology’, I reviewed other religions’ responses to practical application of Hwangdo-nakto ideology. Their responses were divided into two - cooperation and dissension. The recent researches about Manchukuo’ ideologies has bolstered the argue that Wangdo ideology relating to Confucianism was changed into Hwangdo ideology relating to Shintoism. In this writing, I also classified Manchukuo’ ideology into two. But I paid attention to gabs between two ideologies, and took up the position that Manchukuo played a duet, based on differences between Confucianism and Shintoism. And I pointed out how rituals are used in process of building up state, based on ritualizing strategies of Manchukuo.
