박은식(1859~1925)은 국운이 기울어 가던 조선왕조 말기에 태어나 국권회복을 위하여 교육활동ㆍ언론활동ㆍ민족사학서 집필 등을 통하여 독립운동을 전개하였던 선각자였다. 그는 위기에 처한 나라를 구하려면 실력배양을 통하여 自强을 이루어야 하며, 자강을 이루는 방법으로 교육과 산업ㆍ사회제도개혁ㆍ구습개혁ㆍ종교ㆍ대한정신을 강조하였다. 그는 국권을 잃고 식민지로 전락한 절박한 상황에서 민족의 역량을 증대시킬 수 있는 것이면 무엇이든지 동원하려고 하였다고 한다. 그는 서구의 근대 서적을 섭렵하고, 부국강병한 국가를 만들기 위해서 교육을 통하여 民智를 계발하여야 한다고 하였다. 박은식은 우리보다 먼저 부국강명에 성공한 서구의 과학 기술을 배우고 자 하였다, 그렇지만 서구를 모방하는 것은 어디까지나 물질문명에 관한 것이고, 사회질서와 도덕적인 측면에서는 동양사회의 도덕과 윤리가 서구 사회보다 우월하다고 보았다. 그가 궁극적으로 추구한 사회는 모든 사람들이 평화롭게 살 수 있는 대동사회를 추구하고 있었다 그가 추구한 대동사회는 동양 고전에 나오는 지배계급과 피지배계급의 신분적 차이가 엄존하던 계급 사회에서 피치자들의 염원을 반영한 이상사회가 아니었다. 그가 추구한 대동사회는 자유와 평등이 전제된 상하의 계급 구별이 없는 평등한 사회였다. 그는 제국주의 침략이론이었던 사회진화론을 수용하여 부국강병한 국가를 추구하였지만 사회진화론에 나타난 경쟁논리에 많은 회의와 갈등을 일으키는 면모를 보이고 있다. 그는 부국강병한 국가를 건설하고자 한 노력의 일환으로 아동ㆍ의무ㆍ여성ㆍ실업교육 등의 교육이 시급함을 역설하였고, 이러한 교육을 담당할 교사의 양성이 시급하다고 하였다. 부국강병한 국가 건설과 관련하여 박은식은 실업교육을 특히 강조하였다 도덕적인 면에서는 공자의 가르침이 실천되는 사회 다시 말해서 인륜과 도덕이 살아있는 국가를 건설해야 한다고 주장하였다. 박은식의 논설 가운데는 이렇듯 경쟁의 원리와 대동사회를 추구하는 상반되는 주장이 혼재되어 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 주목하여 박은식의 사회진화론 인식과 대동사 상은 어떻게 설명되어질 수 있는가, 나아가서 부국강병의 방법으로서 실업교육론과 구국론은 어떤 연결되는가를 고찰하고자 한다. 이렇듯 상반되는 주장은 누란의 위기에 처한 현실을 극복하려는 노력의 일환이었으며, 결국 구국론에서 합치되어진다고 본다. 그는 서구 근대사상을 수용하여 부국강병한 국가를 건설하려고 노력하였지만 그의 구국론에는 40년 동안 수학하여 온 유교사상이 남아 있었다고 본다.

At the end of old Korea when national right was declining, Park Eun Sik as forerunner expanded the movement to recover national right by diverse literary works. He regarded the time as the prevalence of imperialism. The invasion theory of imperialism power was social doctrine of evolution whose center was occupied by the survival of the fittest, the law of the jungle and struggle for existenceㆍHe had to inevitably accept the competition theory of social doctrine of evolution in reality. He thought that it was essential to import Western scientific civilization and to build a country of wealth and military power in order to save the country in jeopardy. He thought that prosperity of Western developed countries was due to incessant development of scientific technology and cultivation of elites by establishing many schools. As the level of consciousness of nation should be elevated for a country of wealth and military power, he tried to realize the concrete method through education. His education activity was a method of saving the country. He asserted; to save a declining country, it is required to survive in the competitive society; to win in the competitive society, it is essential to enhance power; to enhance power, all nation must unit; to do so, the role and power of education are important. Though asserting such principle of competition, he pursued the construction of united society, Confucian ideal society where humanity and morality are respected, saying that human society would ruin if principle of competition prevails. The united society pursued by him was expanded in the movement to establish Daedonggyo The movement to establish Daedonggyo was expanded as a method to keep the spirit and soul of nation, opposing the activity of Daedong Institution which attempted to convert Confucian circle into pro-Japanese group under the instigation of Japan. For this reason, the movement to establish Daedonggyo must be understood as national movement and the theory of united society asserted by Park Eun Sik can be understood as theory of national salvation. The theory of national salvation of Park Eun Sik asserted: since the power for national development is in the promotion of industry, it is required to encourage vocational education; to cultivate vocational education, it is essential to learn the Western world where specialized knowledge of each area is accumulated, because learning specialized knowledge is a must; thus it is necessary to urgently dispatch students abroad. He said the restriction by social position should be eliminated and scientific technology should be imported. Saying that it is required to urgently build schools for education and presenting the concrete case of advanced countries, he insisted to establish schools. He added that it is also urgent to cultivate teachers who are to teach the students of the schools to be established. Then, he told that diverse education program centering on the consumer should be developed and operated so that teachers and those directly related to the training of government officials and civil life could work creatively. Though admiring Western society in the aspect of material civilization, Park Eun Sik thought that Oriental society was in higher level in spiritual culture. Though attempting to enlighten the nation by accepting the logic of competition of social doctrine of evolution for that reason, he anticipated that social theory of evolution should be overcome. This is because the unity thought of Confucianism that pursued the global peace definitely survived in the base of his thought.
