이 연구는 개항 후 조선이 세계설탕시장으로 편입되면서 생산지, 무역망, 무역상이 변화하는 과정을 고찰했다. 기존에는 개항 전후 무역망을 과거와 단절적으로 파악하고, 무역주체를 화교나 일본 상인 위주로 연구했다. 본 연구는 개항 이후 한국인 생활양식을 바꾸는 신상품이던 설탕에 대한 역사적 사례를 통하여 근대무역구조로 전환되는 과정을 다각도로 조망하는데 기여하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 19세기 말, 20세기 초 조선 설탕무역의 특징으로 다음과 같은 점을 밝혀냈다. 첫째, 조선에서 수입한 설탕제품은 개항 이후 영국 자본계 홍콩 정제당이었다가 러일전쟁 이후 일본이 국책으로 육성한 일본 정제당으로 바뀌었다. 조선이 영국 상품시장에서 일본 상품시장으로 전환되었다는 것을 규명했다. 둘째, 설탕을 유통시키는 주체가 화교에서 영국 상인, 영국 상인에서 다시 일본 상인으로 교체되었다는 점을 확인했다. 19세기 말 20세기 초 동아시아 정세가 급변했다. 이에 따라 개항 이후 화교(산동 상인과 광동 상인)⇒청일전쟁 후 영국 상인⇒러일전쟁 후 일본 상인으로 변경되었다. 셋째, 전통적인 서해안 밀무역로가 개항 후에도 신규 상품인 설탕 무역로로 이용되었음을 입증했다. 산동상인이 재래 범선을 활용해 산동반도와 인천을 오가며 조선의 설탕무역을 담당했다. 전통적 범선항로에 대항해 1880년대 말 상해와 인천을 오가는 기선 정기항로가 신설되면서 서로 경쟁하며 조선의 설탕수입량이 증가했다.

This study investigated how Korean sugar production system, and trade networks changed while Korea became a member in the world sugar market after the opening of the ports to foreign countries. Previous studies have a view that a newly established modern trade networks in Korea has no connection with the traditional trade networks and, therefore, focus only Chinese merchants and Japanese merchants as main players in Korean sugar trade businesses in late 19th. This study based on historical cases on sugar trade in Korea during the late 19th and early 20th centuries found some important characteristics of the Korean sugar trade market at as follows. First, major manufacturers of imported sugar in Korea were changed from the Hongkong refined sugar to the Japanese refined sugar. Second, after the opening of the ports, it was continued the traditional smuggling trade networks of the West Sea as the sugar trade. Third, the main players of sugar trade system in Korea during the 19th centuries was initially Chinese merchant. After the Sino-Japanese War, the British trading firms took over the major role in sugar trade in Korea but were replaced by Japanese merchants since the Russo-Japanese War.
