The guidelines on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Plastic Packaging have been released in February 16, 2022 targeting the whole product chain, which includes the environmental characteristics of the product and the production processes of such product. EPR is a critical policy mechanism that helps advance the circular economy, decreases the environmental impact from a product and its packaging, and promotes the principle of “polluter pays” by holding the producer accountable for the entire lifecycle of the product. EPR policy India is pushing the producers to design the product in such a way that they shall not have a negative effect on the environment. India produces more than 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste daily, nearly 40% of which is not collected and litters the environment. With so much plastic entering the food chain, people are waking up to the adverse effects of plastic on territorial and aquatic life. If plastics demand follows its current trajectory, global plastics-waste volumes would grow from 260 Mt py in 2016 to 460 Mt py by 2030, taking what is already a serious environmental problem to a new level. The EPR Policy in India monitors the companies and the individual involved in the waste management system. It is basically a step towards a sustainable environment and a sustainable waste management. The wastes under this policy are required to be recycled in such a manner that they can be reused. The EPR policy shifted the burden of waste management and sustainable use of life disposal from the municipalities and taxpayers to the producers or manufacturers of such products. EPR Policy also encourages the producers of plastic to design for recycling so that it would result in less spending of time on end-of-life waste management. The EPR is applicable for both plastics waste management rules 2016 and e-waste management rules 1016 amended in 2018, that requires to announce the EPR targets, 25% in the year 2021 - 22, 70% in 2022 - 23 and 100% by 2023 - 24. This article will explain the details of EPR implementation in India and the benefits accrue thereof.
