이 연구는 맹자의 전쟁관을 그가 사용한 전쟁 개념 자체에 초점을 맞추어 해석하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존 연구들은 왕도정치와 의전(義戰)으로 대표되는 정치와 전쟁의 상관관계와 그 관계 속에서 보이는 의전의 특징과 의의를 해명하는 것이 일반적이었다. 이는 맹자 전쟁관을 전쟁개념 외부와의 관계에서 이해하는 성과를 거두었지만, 맹자의 전쟁과 관련한 다양한 개념어들의 의미 차이와 상호관계를 세밀히 분석하여 전쟁 개념 내부를 해석하는 데에는 미진하였기 때문이다. 맹자가 주로 사용한 전쟁 관련 개념어는 ‘전(戰)’, ‘의전(義戰)’, ‘정(征)’, ‘벌(伐)’이 있다. 이들 각각의 의미를 요약하면, 전쟁 일반을 포괄적으로 지칭할 때의 戰이 있고, 유덕자가 수행하는 戰으로서 義戰과 큰 죄에 해당하는 戰(不義戰)이 나뉜다. 義戰은 고대 성왕들이 수행한 征이 그 이상적 모델로 제시된다. 征은 도덕적 우열을 근거로 ‘上伐下’로 설명되는데, 伐은 征의 차원에서 수행되는 伐과 일반적인 군사행동으로서 친다(擊)는 뜻의 伐이 의미상 구별된다. 의전(義戰)은 맹자에게 있어 가장 핵심적인 개념인데, 맹자는 의전은 전국시대의 일반적인 전쟁 양상과 달리 무분별한 살상전이 아니라고 주장한다. 왜냐하면, 맹자에 따르면 의전은 인정(仁政)의 연장으로서 ‘무적(無敵)의 전쟁’이고, 불의를 바로잡는 도덕적·사법적 전쟁이기 때문이다.

The purpose of this study is to interpret Mencius' view of war by focusing on the concept of war itself he used. Existing studies have generally explained the correlation between politics and war, represented by politics by the true king(王道政治) and just war(義戰), and the characteristics and significance of just war (義戰) in that relationship. Although this has resulted in understanding the Mencius view of war in relation to the outside world of his concept of war, but it was not enough to interpret the inside of the concept of war by carefully analyzing the difference in meaning and mutual relationship of various conceptual words related to war. The war-related concepts that Mencius mainly used include ‘Jeon(戰)’, ‘Uijeon (義戰)’, ‘Jeong(征)’, and ‘Beol(伐)’. Summarizing the meaning of each of these, there is Jeon(戰) when it comprehensively refers to war in general, Uijeon(義戰) as a Jeon(戰) performed by virtuous people and Jeon(戰)(Buluijeon(不義戰)) corresponding to a great sin. As for the ‘Uijeon(義戰), the Jeong(征) performed by the ancient holy kings is presented as an ideal model. Jeong(征) is explained as 'superiors does ’Beol(伐)’ to inferiors' based on moral superiority and inferiority. Beol(伐) is semantically differentiated between Beol(伐) performed at the purpose of Jeong(征) and Beol(伐) meaning strike as a general military action. Uijeon(義戰) is the most important concept for Mencius, and Mencius insists that Uijeon(義戰) is not an indiscriminate killing war unlike the general warfare in the Warring States period. Because, according to Mencius, Uijeon(義戰) is an 'enemyless war' as an extension of the benevolent governance(仁政), and it is a moral and judicial war to correct injustice.
