이 논문은 최근 미국의 대표적 문화전쟁의 하나인 1619 프로젝트를 둘러싼 논쟁을 소개하였다. 첫째, 1619 프로젝트보다 앞선 시기에 전개되었던 역사 이해를 둘러싼 갈등의 사례를 살펴보았다. 둘째, <뉴욕타임스> 기획인 1619 프로젝트의 전개 양상을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 1619 프로젝트에 대한 대항마의 성격으로서 트럼프가 만든 1776위원회에 관해 분석하였다. 넷째, 공화당이 장악한 주 정부를 중심으로 1619 프로젝트의 자료뿐만 아니라 비판적 인종이론을 가르치는 것을 금지하는 법안을 통과시키는 움직임에 관해 서술하였다. 미국의 역사 해석을 둘러싼 갈등을 타산지석으로 삼아 한국의 역사교육에 던지는 시사점을 찾아보고자 했다.

This article introduced the controversy surrounding Project 1619, one of the most prominent culture wars that has recently gripped the United States. First, I looked at examples of conflicts over historical understanding that preceded the 1619 Project. Second, I examined how the 1619 Project, a New York Times initiative, was developed. Third, I analyzed Trump’s 1776 Commission as a counterpoint to the 1619 Project. Fourth, I describe the movement in Republican-controlled states to pass legislation banning the teaching of critical race theory as well as the 1619 Project materials. Using the conflict over the interpretation of history in the United States as a model, this paper explores the implications for Korean history education.
