본 논문의 목적은 『홍범연의』의 전체 구성을 검토하고, 내용을 분석하여 그 주자학적 성격을 드러내는 것이다. 기존 연구들은 모두 『홍범연의』가 경세서라는 점에는 동의하면서도, 성격에 대해서는 이견이 있었다. 실학적 경세서 혹은 도학적 경세서로 보는 관점이 있고, 최근에는 고대 점복적 경세의 전형으로 평가하기도 하였다. 본 논문에서는 저술 의도와 전체구성 및 인용된 주석을 상세히 분석하여 『홍범연의』의 주자학적 성격을 드러내고자 하였다. 연구 결과 『홍범연의』는 이휘일과 이현일의 저술 동기로 볼 때, 새로운 관점을 제시하거나 개혁을 실현하기 위한 목적으로 저술된 것이 아니라 기존 주석의 부족한 점을 보완하고, 성인시대의 경세를 상세히 고증하여 후세에 전달하기 위한 목적으로 저술되었음을 알 수 있었다. 『홍범연의』는 성인의 경세를 서술한 경(經)과 주석과 사례에 해당하는 전(傳)을 차례로 배치하였다. 전(傳)에는 한당대의 주소를 통해 그 구체적인 내용을 고증하고 주희를 비롯한 송대학자의 견해를 함께 배치하여, 주소의 내용을 그대로 받아들이지 않고 주자학의 관점에서 「홍범」을 이해하고자 하였다. 「황극」 구성에서 주소의 견해를 따르지 않고 철저하게 주희의 관점을 고수한 것이 대표적이다. 이외에도 「오사」 「계의」는 물론 별도의 장으로 편집된 「홍범연의변」과 「홍범총론」까지 「홍범연의」의 내용은 주희의 관점을 적극적으로 반영하고 있다. 『홍범연의』는 홍범구주의 아홉 조목 별로 핵심 내용을 제시하고 고대 경서와 한당대의 주소를 통해 성인의 경세를 고증하고자 하였다는 점에서 분명 존고(存古)적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 하지만 동시에 개별 장마다 배치된 송대 학자들의 견해는 주자학의 관점에서 「홍범」을 독해하는 방향으로 유도하고 있다. 그러므로 『홍범연의』는 이휘일과 이현일을 비롯한 영남의 지식인들이 주자학의 관점에서 고대 성인의 경세학을 이해하고 정리한 결실이라고 할 수 있겠다.

This study aims to review the overall composition of Hongbeomyeonui洪範衍義 and analyze its content to shed light on its nature in terms of Zhu Xi studies. Previous studies defined its nature in various ways with a focus on its nature as a book of practical science or its retro character. The present study set out to analyze in details its writing intention, overall composition, and cited annotations to demonstrate that it was a collection of annotations for Great Plan洪範, sincerely reflecting the viewpoint of Zhu Xi studies. The findings show based on the intentions of its authors that Hongbeomyeonui was written by Lee Hui-il and Lee Hyeon-il to supplement the lacking aspects of the old annotations and investigate with historical details the statecraft of the sages era to be delivered to later generations rather than presenting a new perspective or implementing a reform. Hongbeomyeonui places the Confucian classics offering detailed descriptions of sages’ statecraft and tries to provide historical researches on its specific content based on annotations from Han and Tang. It also includes opinions of scholars in Song along with Zhu Xi, trying to understand Great Plan in the viewpoint of Zhu Xi studies. Hongbeomyeonui represents the fruition of Yeongnam's intellectuals including Lee Hui-il and Lee Hyeon-il that arranged the statecraft science of sages in the viewpoint of Zhu Xi studies.
