가나는 민주주의가 안정적으로 정착한 대표적인 모범국가로서, 안정적인 정세와 풍부한 천연자원을 바탕으로 일차산품 위주의 수출 구조를 부가가치 창출이 가능한 경제 구조로 전환함으로써 서아프리카의 경제 강국으로 부상하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 최근 국가부채의 누적으로 국제통화기금(IMF)에 구제금융을 신청하는 등 경제적 어려움을 겪고 있어, 이를 극복해야 하는 과제도 안고 있다. 대외정책 면에서 가나는 지역 정세 안정에 역점을 두고 지역 공동체에 적극 참여하는 한편, 경제적인 실리를 추구하며 다양한 국가들과 협력관계를 증진하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 또한, 가나는 유엔을 비롯한 국제무대에서도 활발히 활동하고 있다.
올해 수교 45주년을 맞이한 한-가나 양국관계는 수교 이래 정치, 경제, 개발 협력을 포함 여러 방면에서 비약적으로 발전해 왔다. 가나는 민주주의 가치를 공유하고 평화ㆍ안보에 관한 공동의 인식을 가진 우방 국가로서 국제무대에서 우리 입장을 확고히 지지하고 있고, 경제ㆍ통상 면에서도 우리의 주요 무역 파트너로서 서아프리카 시장 진출의 관문 역할을 하고 있다. 또한, 가나는 우리의 ODA 중점협력국으로서 주요 개발협력 대상국이기도 하다. 가나는 아프리카대륙자유무역지대(AfCFTA) 사무국 소재지로서 안정된 정세를 바탕으로 서아프리카를 넘어 인구 13억, 총 GDP 3조 4천억 달러의 아프리카 시장 진출을 위한 교두보 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대되는 만큼, 우리나라는 앞으로도 가나와 경제ㆍ통상 관계를 비롯한 우호협력 관계를 지속 발전시켜 나가야 할 것이다.
Ghana is often considered a model nation for Africa with a stable democracy and is now striving to transform itself, building on its political stability and an abundance of natural resources, from an economy dominated by the export of raw materials into a value-added economy with the aim of emerging as an economic power in West Africa. Currently, Ghana is tasked with addressing economic challenges such as a soaring public debt, which has led the government to seek a financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In terms of foreign policy, Ghana is actively engaging with regional partners to bring about regional stability; making efforts to enhance cooperation with different countries as a way of pursuing economic interest; and vigorously engaging with international fora such as the United Nations.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Ghana. Korea and Ghana have since built a strong relationship through comprehensive and rapid development of exchanges and cooperation in the various fields of politics, economy, and development cooperation, etc. The relationship between Korea and Ghana is based on a shared value of democracy as well as a common commitment to peace and stability, which explains why Ghana has been a friendly nation showing firm support to Korea in international fora. On the economic front, Ghana is Korea’s important trade partner that serves as the gateway to the West African market. Ghana is also recognized as one of Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) priority partner countries. As the host country of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Ghana is expected to become the international gateway to the African market embracing 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of 3.4 trillion US dollars. In this regard, Korea would do well to continue to build friendly and cooperative ties with Ghana including in the areas of economy and trade.
