남언기(南彦紀, 1534∼?)는 조선 선조(宣祖) 때인 1570년대에 처가가 있는 전라도(全羅道) 동복현(同福縣) 사평촌(沙坪村)에 고반원(考槃園)을 조성하였다. 그는 고반원에서의 원림 생활을 소재로 강호가사 「고반원가(考槃園歌)」를 지었다. 「고반원가」에 나타난 장소의 양상과 그 의미를 탐색한 이 글의 요지는, 다음과 같다. 먼저, 이 글은 「고반원가」에 나타난 장소의 양상을 한양, 고반원 및 그 주변으로 대별하였다. 그 결과, 한양은 조선의 대도시로 성리학에 침잠하기 어렵고, 수기치인의 실현이 어려운 세속임을 알았다. 또한 화자의 새 거주지인 고반원 및 그 주변은 그가 은거하는 장소이자 산수자연의 즐거움을 누리는 장소이고, 병들고 늙은 것을 위로받을 수 있는 장소이며, 도덕적 심성을 수양하는 장소임을 알았다. 다음으로, 이 글은 「고반원가」에 나타난 장소의 의미를 살폈다. 그리하여 고반원과 그 주변은 한양의 대체지로, 화자가 이곳의 자연물과 인공 건축물에 이름을 붙이거나 ‘푸름’, ‘맑음’의 이미지를 부여하는 등 애착을 가진 장소임을 알았다. 또한, 고반원과 그 주변은 유가적·도가적 문화가 동시에 실현되는 복합 공간이며, 유가적 인적 네트워크를 기반으로 유자들이 주인을 찾아올 수 있는 열린 공간임을 알았다.

Nam Eon-gi(南彦紀, 1534∼?) built Gobanwon(考槃園) in Sapyeongchon, Dongbok-hyeon, Jeolla-do, where his wife’s parents lived, in the 1570s, during the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty. He wrote Gangho-Gasa 「Gobanwonga(考槃園歌)」based on the garden life in Gobanwon. The gist of this paper, which has analyzed the aspects and meanings of places in 「Gobanwonga」, is as follows. Firstly, this paper discusses the aspect of the place in 「Gobanwonga」 by dividing it into Hanyang, Gobanwon and its surroundings. As a result, Hanyang, as a large city of Joseon, found it difficult to think deeply about Neo-Confucianism and realize that it was difficult to realize self-cultivation. In addition, it was found that the narrator’s new residence, Gobanwon and its surroundings, is a place where he retreats, enjoys the pleasures of nature, is a place where he can comfort the sick and old, and cultivates his moral mind. Secondary, this paper explored the meaning of the place in 「Gobanwonga」. So, I knew that Gobanwon and its surroundings were an alternative to Hanyang, a place that the speaker had an attachment to by naming natural objects and artificial buildings here or endowing them with images of ‘blueness’ and ‘clarity’. In addition, it was found that Gobanwon and its surroundings are a complex space where Confucian cultures and Taoist cultures are simultaneously realized, and an open space where Confucian scholars could find their owners based on Confucian personal networks.
