Objective; The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of military trauma compared with civilian trauma and to suggest a long-term development direction for the military trauma system in the future.
Method; This was a retrospective observational study conducted in an emergency room of a military tertiary hospital. We enrolled consecutive severe trauma patients visiting our emergency room from January 2017 to December 2019. We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records to determine the characteristics of military trauma including vital signs, injury mechanism, injury site, duration of survival, transport method, surgery, and interventional procedure.
Result; Among 20 patients, 3 were dead immediate after arriving at the emergency room. The mean injury severity score was 23.2±8.7 and 12(60%) were treated by emergency procedures(operation and interventional procedure) and 8(40%) were required conservative management. Overall survival rate was 85% and the most common cause of death was active bleeding.
Conclusion; By fully understanding the characteristics of military trauma, we can thoroughly prepare for the trauma management system including operation of military trauma center in the future.
