연구 목적: 본 논문은 담화-화용론적인 관점에서 인접쌍에서 응답 장치로써 ‘전적으로’의 화용론적인 접근 방식을 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 연구 방법: 기관 상황에서 발생하는 래리 킹 라이브를 기반으로 질적 연구를 시행하였다. 연구 내용: ‘전적으로’의 특정 유형의 다기능적인 역할과 관련하여 ‘전적으로’는 발언권을 얻거나 또는 유지하고, 승인, 이행, 합동, 강화, 확인, 청자반응 신호, 증명, 완전한 동의, 의견 일치, 열중, 그리고 유대감 장치로 사용되는 경향이 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 결론 및 제언: ‘전적으로’는 다음의 대화자가 이전 대화자와 의견이 일치한다는 것을 예상할 수 있다. 따라서 ‘전적으로’는 절대적 동의 응답 장치를 나타내는 기능을 한다. 말뭉치 그리고 기관 상황과 같은 데이터를 기반으로 향후 연구는 ‘전적으로’에 대한 구체적이고 다양한 화용론적인 접근 방식에 주목할 수 있다.

From the perspectives of discourse-pragmatics, this article has expatiated on examining pragmatic approaches to freestanding use of totally as a response device in turn-sequences.
