연구목적: 이 연구에서는 사회운동 주체로서 스스로가 규정한 경력성공에 대한 정의는 무엇인가 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구방법: 사전에 정의된 ‘경력성공’의 개념보다 참여자들의 고유한 체험내용으로서의 ‘경력성공’에 대한 의미체계나 해석체계를 파악하고자 질적연구방법을 선택하였다. 10년 이상 시민단체 실무자로서의 경력을 가진 분들을 연구 참여자로 선정하고, 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구내용: 시민단체, 즉 NGO 활동가들의 주관적 경력성공에 대해 다루고 있다. 결론 및 제언: 분석결과 주관적 경력성공에 대한 정의는 사회변화를 갈망했고, 자신의 가치와 소명을 찾고 실현하는 것, 실천하는 주체가 되는 것, 동료와 공동체 멘토의 지지로 스스로 변화하고 성장하는 경험을 하는 것으로 간단하게 요약할 수 있다. 본 연구결과는 NGO활동가들의 경력개발에 대한 이론적인 접근뿐만 아니라 현실적인 개입 측면에서 유용한 이해의 틀로써 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

This study covers subjective career success of those people in civic groups, i.e. NGO (non-governmental organization) activists. It includes their personal definitions of career success as social activists. For this research, qualitative research method was chosen to comprehend the meaning of career success based on the participants’ own experience rather than the dictionary definition. In this regard, in-depth interviews were conducted with those who possess over 10 years of hands-on experience in civic groups. The analysis indicated that subjective career success could be defined as contributing to social changes; finding and realizing one’s own value and calling; being the true agent of own action; having experiences that make themselves change and grow with peer feedback or support from a mentor; The study results could provide career theorists and practitioners with theoretical basis to understand career development of NGO activists.
