연구 목적: 이 논문은 세계사 교과서의 첫 부분인 비옥한 초승달 지대에 대한 서술의 당위성을 확인하고, 적절한 서술 대안을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 세계사 교과서의 첫 부분인 비옥한 초승달 지대에 대해 살펴보고, 앞으로 세계사 교육에서 어떻게 서양 고대사를 서술할 것인가에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 연구 방법: 이 연구에서는 역사 논문 외에도 교육과정과 교과서 등을 심도 있게 살펴보는 문헌연구 방법을 선택하였다. 교수요목기부터 현재까지의 교육과정을 살펴보고, 현행 4종 세계사 교과서에서는 어떻게 서술하고 있는지 확인하였다. 연구 내용: 그동안 교육과정에서는 비옥한 초승달지대에 대한 명확한 이해가 부족하였다. 오리엔트, 고대문명, 메소포타미아와 이집트 등 비슷한 개념이 혼용되어 사용되어 왔으며, 현재도 여전히 명확한 개념이 적용되지 못하고 있다. 또한 현행 세계사 교과서에서도 비옥한 초승달 지대 서술이 생략 되거나 잘못 서술되기도 했다. 잘못 그려진 지도와 맞지 않는 캡션 등의 문제도 확인되었다. 결론 및 제언: 메소포타미아와 이집트를 하나의 문명권으로 바라보아야 한다. 또한 비옥한 초승달 지대에 대해 잘못된 교과서의 서술을 수정해야 한다. 무엇보다 비옥한 초승달 지대라는 큰 틀 안에서 이후 서양과 아시아의 역사전개를 바라본다면 틀에 박힌 서구중심적 역사관에서 벗어나는 하나의 움직임이 될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

This study concerns about how to describe World History textbooks in the midst of a crisis in history education. First, I would like to confirm the error in the description of the Fertile Crescent, the first part of the world history textbook, and suggest an alternative how to describe ancient Western history in world history education in the future. In addition to historical articles, curriculum and textbooks were examined in depth. So far, there has been a lack of clear understanding of the Fertile Crescent in the curriculum. Similar concepts such as Orient, ancient civilization, Mesopotamia and Egypt have been used interchangeably, and a clear concept is still not applied. Also, in current World History textbooks, the description of the Fertile Crescent has been omitted or misrepresented. and I find that incorrectly drawn maps and inconsistent captions. Mesopotamia and Egypt should be viewed as a single civilization. We also need to correct the erroneous textbook description of the Fertile Crescent. Above all, if we look at the historical development of the West and Asia within the larger frame of the Fertile Crescent, we expect that it will be a movement to break away from the stereotypical Western-centered view of history.
