연구 목적: 이 연구는 버지니아 울프의 『막간』에서 비인격체인 도구로써 메가폰이 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있는지를 살펴본다. 연구 방법: 메가폰이 존재론적인 측면에서 주요 등장인물들의 자아발전에 끼친 영향을 탐색하며, 역시 메가폰을 통해 막간을 알리는 동요와 같은 음악 장르의 역할을 확인한다. 연구 내용: 주요 등장인물 중 조오지가 메가폰과 동일체인 올리브 사이의 관계를 통해 ‘나’라는 자아존재에서 ‘우리’라는 사회존재로 발전하는 모습을 접근한다. 그 밖에 야외극에서 메가폰을 통한 음악 장르인 동요를 통해서 극에 참여하는 청중들에게 어떤 영향을 주었는지를 탐색한다. 결론 및 제언: 소설 속의 드라마 장르인 『막간』에서 거의 등장인물인 메가폰의 역할 연구를 통해 20세기 중엽 모더니즘의 새로운 경향과 특성을 파악한 시도는 상당한 의미가 있다. 특히 존재론적 철학적 모티브를 확인하고 동요 같은 음악적 소재를 예술적으로 승화시킨 것은 차후 울프 작품 연구에도 적용해 볼 수 있는 기폭제 역할을 하고 있다.

This study examines the meaning of megaphone as an impersonal tool in Virginia Wolf's Between the Acts. We explore the influence of megaphone on the self-development of major characters in the ontological terms, and also confirm the role of music genre such as nursery rhymes that announce the interlude in the drama through megaphones. Among the main characters, George is approached by the development from the self-being of ‘I’ to the social being of ‘we’ through the relationship between the megaphone and Olive. In addition, it is also explored how the songs influence the audience participating in the outdoor play through nursery rhymes, a genre of music through megaphone. It is significantly important that we attempt to grasp the new trends and characteristics of modernism in the mid-20th century through the study of the role of megaphone, almost a character in Between the Acts, a drama genre in the novel. In particular, confirming ontological philosophical motifs and artistic sublimation of musical materials such as nursery rhymes serves as a catalyst for the future Woolf's work research.
