2021년 4월 김호연의 장편 『불편한 편의점』이 출간되었다. 이 작품은 서울역 노숙자 독고 씨가 70대 여성의 지갑을 찾아준 인연으로 그녀가 운영하는 편의점에서 야간 아르바이트를 시작하며 서사가 전개된다. 노숙자 출신의사내가 편의점과 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향과 변화를 주는 감동 서사의 핵심인물이다. 시간적 배경은 2019년 11월부터 2020년 2월 말까지 3개월이다. 작가는 편의점을 매개로 독자에게 무엇을 전하고자 했을까. 주인공은 기억 상실 후 노숙자 선배와 TV를 통해 다양한삶의 양상과 희로애락을 새롭게 배운다. 신자유주의하개인주의 시대라고 하더라도 사회는, 구성원에게 곤경에 처한 타인을 도우라는 도덕적 요구를 하는 ‘말 걸기’를 해온다. 우리의 의무를 표명하며 우리에게 압박을 가하는 요구하에서 개인은 살아가고 있다. 철저히자기중심주의적이던 주인공이 기억 상실 후 삶을 새롭게 배우면서 사회가 요구하는 도덕, 그 권위와 구속을 일부 내면화하게 되고 직접 타인으로부터 도움을 받기도 하면서 점점 공감하는 윤리적 인간이 되어 간다. 이러한 사회의 도덕적 구속력하에서 그는 편의점에서 위태로운 타인의 ‘얼굴’을 발견하고 바라보다가 그 ‘얼굴’이 발산하는 도덕적 명령에 책임감을 느끼고 결국 ‘말 걸기’를 결단하며 도움을 주고받는 윤리적 주체가 된다. 그런 점에서 ‘말 걸기’는 단순한 소통이 아니라 공감, 조력, 사회도덕을 포괄하는 사회의식의 명령이며 윤리적 주체의 행동이자 윤리적 주체의 탄생을 의미했다.

As themain character,who was thoroughly self-centered, learns life anew after memory loss, he internalizes some of the morality, authority, and restraint required by society, and receives help directly fromothers, becoming an ethical humanwho gradually sympathizes.With the moral constraints of this society, he finds and looks at the "face" of another person at stake at a convenience store, feels responsible for the moral commands the face emits, and eventually decides to "talk" and becomes an ethical subject to exchange help. In this regard, "talking" was not just communication, but a social consciousness command that encompasses empathy, assistance, and social morality, andmeant the birth and behavior of ethical subjects.
