온갖 역경을 극복하고 ‘신대륙’을 ‘발견’한 콜럼버스의 신화는 한때 그 누구도 의심할 수 없을 정도로 견고했다. 콜럼버스는 단순한 탐험가가 아니라 작금의 세계상을 구축한, 그리하여 근대를 열었다는 상징성을 갖고 있었다. 이 서구 중심적 관점은 근대전환기 동아시아에도 이식되었다. 이 글은 대한 제국기의 여러 미디어에 산포된 콜럼버스 관련 지식의 수용 양상을 통해 그의 신화가 어떤 경위와 의도로 구축되었는지를 고찰한 것이다. 그동안 대한제국기의 서구영웅 수용에 관한 연구는 정치가 및 군인에 집중되어 있었다. 하지만 콜럼버스는 이 시기에 소개된 어떤 인물보다 다양한 지면에서 존재감을 드러낸다. 여러 핵심 자료 중 여기서 주목한 것은 『독립신문』, 『유몽천자』, 『그리스도신문』의 콜럼버스 약전(略傳), 그리고 량치차오의 논설을 매개로 신문, 잡지에 소개된 콜럼버스 관련 정보들이다. 이 텍스트들은 대개 사실과는 괴리된 콜럼버스의 이상화된 면모를 내포하고 있었다. 특히 량치차오가 근대적 국민의 자질을 논한 「진취와 모험」과 「의력」에서 콜럼버스의 비중이 컸다는 점, 그리고 그 내용들이 대한제국기 공론장에 누차 번역되었다는 점에서 나타나듯 콜럼버스를 둘러싼 허구는 동아시아에서 진취성 및 인내력 같은 미덕을 강조하는 맥락과 혼재되어 있었다. 이렇게 수용된 콜럼버스 관련 지식은 대한제국기 미디어의 자체적인 계몽의 언설로 재생산되기도 하였다.

Christopher Columbus' myth of overcoming adversity and “discovering” the “New World” was once undoubtedly strong. Columbus was more than just an explorer; he symbolized the establishment of the current world image and the opening of the modern era. This Western-centric perspective was transplanted into East Asia during the modern transition period. This study investigates how and why the myth arose from the accumulation of information about Columbus distributed through various media during the Korean Empire period. Until now, research on the accommodation of Western heroes during the Korean Empire period has focused on politicians and soldiers. However, Columbus has a larger presence than any other figure introduced during this period. Among the essential materials, this study focuses on Columbus-related information introduced in newspapers and magazines through Columbus' biography in The Independent, The Thousand Character Series, Christian News, and Liang Qichao's editorials. Usually, these texts included an idolization of Columbus, which could deviate from the facts. Notably, the fiction regarding Columbus was intertwined with the context of accentuating virtues such as initiative and perseverance in East Asia, as evidenced by the fact that Columbus was prominently mentioned in 「Enterprise and Adventure」 and 「Perseverance」, in which Liang Qichao discussed the qualities of the modern citizen, and the contents were repeatedly translated into the public sphere during the Korean Empire. The knowledge related to Columbus was reproduced as a discourse of enlightenment by the media during the Korean Empire period.
