The present study aims to investigate the errors in foreign words transcription by investigating the YouTube subtitles. To this end, the YouTube channel was examined on the basis of popularity and subscriber ranking and the rating was conducted by Playboard. In this paper, 10 videos of each 100 YouTube channel were selected and a total of 1,000 foreign words error transcription in YouTube subtitles were researched.
The finding of this study is that there are three types of foreign language transcription errors in YouTube subtitles. First, it is errors of initial consonants. The errors of initial consonants were divided into ‘fortis errors’, ‘F transcription errors’, and ‘other errors’. The second error type is characterized by a vowel error. Vowel errors were classified into ‘half-vowel errors after ㅈ, ㅊ’, ‘[∫] + ㅣ, ㅔ errors’, and ‘other errors’. The third one is the error of final consonants. The errors of final consonants were divided into ‘voiceless plosive [p], [t], [k] errors’ and ‘final insertion errors’.
With respect to foreign language transcription errors in YouTube subtitles, the error ranking is as follows. ‘Other errors (71%) were the most common among vowel errors. The next rank is the error of final consonant silent plosive notation error (39%). The third is the [∫] phonetic transcription error of final vowels (29%). The fourth is the error of semivowels after ‘ ㅈ’ and ‘ㅊ ’. The fifth is a fortis error (20%) of the initial consonant error. The sixth is other errors (14%) among initial consonant errors. The next is F transcription error (11%) of initial consonant error. The last is the error of final consonant insertion (5%).
A very high percentage (95%) of the Internet population are using YouTube. For this reason, YouTube has an obligation to deliver the correct information to viewers. Subtitles are no exception. The significance of the study is that a variety of error data were actually investigated through a total of 1,000 YouTube videos in 100 YouTube channels.
