이 글은 오늘날 한국 서브컬처를 동아시아적 지평에서 근본적으로 재고찰하기 위한 예비작업으로서 박정희 정권 초창기 서사만화인 『도전자』와 『폭탄아』(1964)에 주목한다. 두 만화는 식민지 체험의 극복 소위 항일 모티브의 한국 서브컬처 서사의 마스터플롯의 원형을 제시했다고 평가된다. 이러한 항일 서사의 대중적 호소력은 만화 특유 형식에서 기인한다. 두 만화의 항일 내셔널리즘은 그것과 전적으로 불화하는 듯한 일본적 이미지의 범람을 만화적으로 상연한다. 내셔널리즘을 표방하면서 만화적으로는 이와 전적으로 불화하는 표현을 지향하는 표현적 역설은 왜색이라는 배타적인 담론으로 유지되던 전후 내셔널리즘과 초국가적 서브컬처의 배양ㆍ축적 양상을 흥미롭게 시사한다. 이 글에서는 이러한 축적의 양상을 알렉세이 유르착의 수행적 전환(performative shift) 개념을 참조하여, 초국가적 팝 문화가 국지적으로 맥락화되어 생산되는 문화 과정으로 해명하고자 한다.

This article focuses on two epic manga works from the early period of Park-Jeonghee’s regime, Dojeonja and Poktan-a(1964) as a preliminary to a more fundamental examination of Korean pop culture, which aims at East Asian perspective today. These two comics are considered to have provided the prototype for the masterplot of the Korean subcultural narrative of ‘overcoming’ the colonial experience, the so-called anti-Japanese motif. Ironically, the anti-Japanese nationalism of both manga comically stages a proliferation of Japanese imagery that seems wholly at odds with the nationalism of the time. This contradictions, which aims to represent nationalism but is cartoonishly at odds with it, is interestingly suggestive of the cultivation and accumulation of nationalism and transnational subcultures in the postwar period, which were maintained in an exclusive discourse, called ‘the Japanese’. This article attempts to elucidate this mode of accumulation as a cultural process through which transnational pop culture is locally contextualized and produced, with reference to Alexei Yurchak’s concept of performative shift.
