남미 국가들과 한국은 극지방에 많은 관심을 가지고 국제사회에서 다양한 국제협력 활동을 하고 있다. 남미 국가 중에서도 칠레와 아르헨티나는 일찍이 남극에 매우 쉽게 접근할 수 있었기 때문에 극지 활동에 큰 관심을 가지고 다양한 활동을 해왔다. 한국은 상대적으로 늦게 극지 활동에 관심을 가지게 되었으나, 최근의 경제 및 기술의 발전이 높은 평가를 받으면서 극지와 관련된 다양한 활동을 진행하고 있다. 본 논문은 남극 문제를 다루는 국제적 거버넌스를 인식하고, 특히 칠레와 아르헨티나가 남극에서 가장 가까운 육지이고 남극조약체계에서 활발하게 활동하고 있다는 점에 착안하여, 이 극지방에 대한 남미 국가들의 접근방식을 소개하고자 한다. 또한 이 글은 주변 상황을 고려하여 한국의 입장과 정책을 소개하고, 남극 활동에 대한 한국과 남미 국가들의 협력 가능성을 모색하고자 한다.

South American countries and Korea are engaged in various international cooperation activities in the international community with a lot of interest in the polar region. Among South American countries, Chile and Argentina have been engaged in various activities with great interest in polar activities as they had very easy access to Antarctica earlier. On the other hand, Korea became interested in polar activities relatively late, but as the recent economic and technological development has been highly evaluated, various activities related to the polar regions have been carried out. This paper aims to recognize the international governance that deals with the Antarctic affairs and introduce South American countries’ approaches toward this polar region, especially focusing on Chile and Argentina as they are the closest lands to the area and are actively in the Antarctic Treaty System. Considering the surrounding circumstances, this paper will also introduce Korea’s stance and policies and seek for potential possibilities of cooperation between Korea and South American countries on Antarctic activities.
