교회음악은 역사적으로 하나님의 관계를 회복하고 지속시키기 위한 매개체(媒介體)의 역할을 감당해 왔다. 피조물인 우리는 상시로 세속적인 현장을 딛고 살 수밖에 없는 존재다. 이런 존재들에게 거룩하고 완전한 창조주를 향한 찬송을 드린다는 것은 그 행위 자체만으로도 부정하고 악하다 할 수 있을 것이다. 그런 존재를 위해 독생자를 내어주신 하나님의 자비하심을 체험하며 살아간다는 것은 더할 수 없는 축복과 은혜라 하겠다. 부정한 존재가 온전하고 거룩한 존재를 향한 감사와 기쁨을 표현할 수 있는 가장 효과적인 방법은 바로 찬송이다. 따라서 찬송에 담긴 세속성의 논쟁은 어쩌면 우리 안에 내재한 죄성의 문제와 무관하지 않다고 하겠다. 본 연구는 교회음악의 세속성에 대한 논의를 공론화하여 이 논쟁의 접합점을 찾고자 하였다. 그리스도의 피로 속량(贖良) 받은 우리가 찬송에 담을 수 있는 최대의 가치가 무엇인지를 짧은 지면을 통해 발견하고 찾고자 하는 것을 연구의 목적이고 목표다. 우리가 고전음악이라 부르는 교회음악도 당시의 시대상과 문화적 사회상을 반영한 음악이었다. 오늘날 세속성 논란의 대상이 된 찬송은 미래에 자녀 세대에게 고전음악이 될 것이다. 사실 교회 음악에 세속적인 면을 다룰 때 가장 크게 쟁점으로 부각하는 것은 바로 대중성과 상업성이다. 그렇다면 대중성을 회중 친화적이란 관점으로, 상업성을 문화수용과 실천적인 입장에서 고전음악을 중심으로 한 교회음악의 보수적 견해와 태도를 고수해 온 기성세대가 조금 더 넓은 이해를 할 수 있기를 바라는 견해를 담았다. 이를 위해 연구자는 본론에서 과거 교회사를 통해 얻은 교훈을 바탕으로 부자교회와 가난한 성도라는 관점과 교회음악의 발전에 세속성의 수용과정이 주는 잃는 것과 얻는 것을 정리해 보았다. 마지막으로 교회음악의 본질과 가치에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 세속성을 재조명하는데 필요한 문화수용과 시대적 사회상의 반영을 언급하였다. 다시 말하자면, 현대찬송에 대한 세속성의 논란을 성경적이고 역사적인 자료를 바탕으로 살펴보고 수용적이고 긍정적인 측면에서 재고하여 이를 적용할 수 있는 현실적인 대안들을 찾고자 하는 것이 본 연구의 주된 내용이라 하겠다.
Church music plays the role of a body to restore and maintain the relationship with God in the past. As created beings, we have no choice but to live with a mouthpiece in a secular scene at all times. To give these beings the highest praise to a holy and perfect Creator would be enough and evil in itself. It is said that experiencing and living the authority of God, who gave His only begotten existence, is an incomparable blessing and grace. Hymns are the most effective way for an unclean being to express gratitude and joy towards a whole and holy being. Therefore, the controversy of secularity in hymns is likely not irrelevant to the problem of sinfulness inherent in us. This study tried to find the junction of this debate by publicizing the discussion on the secularity of church music. The purpose and goal of the study are to find out what the greatest value that we, who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, can contain in hymns is through a short space. Church music, which we commonly call classical music, reflected the times and cultural and social aspects of the time. Hymns, which have become the subject of controversy over secularity today, will become classical music for our children’s generations in the future. In fact, when dealing with secular aspects of church music, the most significant issues that emerge are popularity and commerciality. Thus, it contains the views that the older generation, who have adhered to the conservative views and attitudes of church music centered on classical music, can have a broader understanding from the viewpoint of popularity as congregation-friendly and commerciality as cultural acceptance and practicality. To this end, I summarized the gains and losses from the acceptance process of secularity in the development of church music and the perspectives of rich churches and poor believers based on lessons learned from church history in the past. Lastly, cultural acceptance and the reflection of the social conditions of the times were mentioned in order to shed light on secularity that had a positive effect on the nature and value of church music. In other words, the main content of this study is to look at the controversy of secularity in modern hymns based on biblical and historical data, reconsider it from an accepting and positive aspect, and find realistic alternatives to apply it.
