이 글은 지금까지 <운영전>과 대비되면서 그 문예적, 사회적 의미가 제대로 평가되지 못한 <상사동기>에 재현된 사랑의 양상을 분석하고, 이를 당대 문인사회의 사랑에 대한 인식과 연관지어 그 사회적, 문화적 의미를 따져보고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 <상사동기>의 내용적 특성과 유통에 대해 정리하고 <상사동기>가 사랑을 어떻게 재현하고 있는지, 행복한 결말이 의미하고 있는 바가 무엇인가를 살핀다. 그리고 16세기 중후반~17세기 문사들의 사랑에 대한 인식 및 사랑의 관행과 연관지어 <상사동기>가 갖는 의미를 밝힌다. <상사동기>는 일회적이고 소비적인 관계에서 상호적이고 지속적인 관계로 발전하면서 사랑의 의미를 발견해가는 작품이다. 남성 주인공 김생은 영영을 한번 본 뒤에 몹시 만나고 싶어하지만 영영을 지속적인 관계를 맺을 대상이 아니라 유희적이고 일회적인 대상으로 여긴다. 그러나 김생은 영영을 재회한 뒤 결혼을 하지 않고 영영과 함께 사는 삶을 택한다. 공명을 버리고 사랑을 선택한 것이다. 이는 사랑의 관점에서 보면 행복한 결말이라 할 수 있지만 사회의 관점에서 보면 사회의 규범을 거부한 결말이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 <상사동기>의 결말은 통속성을 벗어난 파격성을 보인다. 작가는 이 문제를 본격적으로 다루지 않지만 여기에는 사랑[情]을 긍정하는 의식이 깔려 있으며, 이는 16~17세기 문인 사회의 사랑에 대한 인식 및 사랑의 관행과 깊은 관련이 있다.

In this article I analyzed the aspect and meaning of love reproduced in Sangsadonggi, which literary and social meaning has not been properly evaluated while contrasting with Unyeongjeon. And I considered this in relation to the perception and practice of love among literary men at the time. Sangsadonggi shows a character who discovers the meaning of love while developing from a one-time consumption relationship to a mutual and continuous relationship. The male protagonist, Kim Saeng, is excessively immersed in Young-young, but considers Young-young as a playful and one-time object. However, after reuniting with Young-young, Kim Saeng chooses to live with Young-young without getting married. He abandoned resonance and chose love. From the perspective of love, this can be called a happy ending, but from the perspective of society, it can be said to be an ending that rejects social norms. Therefore, the ending of Sangsadonggi shows a breakthrough beyond the popular attribute. The writer does not deal with this issue in earnest, but there is a consciousness of affirming love, which is deeply related to the perception of love and the practice of love in the literary society of the 16th and 17th centuries.
