본 연구는 국내외 한국고전문학·한문학 학술장의 접촉면을 확인하고 확대해가기 위한 목적으로 국내외에서 출간된 영어 단행본 및 학술논문의 현황을 조사한 것이다. 단행본은 1960년부터 2022년까지 출간된 번역서, 개설서, 연구논저를 포괄한다. 학술논문의 경우 한국학과 관련된 전문학술지 해외 4종, 국내 3종을 대상으로 2000년부터 2022년까지 간행된 논문을 조사하였다. 1960년부터 2022년까지 국내외에서 간행된 한국고전문학 분야 단행본은 총 90종(국내 출판 12종, 해외 출판 78종)이었다. 이 중 번역서(anthology 포함)가 77종으로 절대적인 비중을 차지하고 있다. 이는 해외 한국학의 초창기부터 고전 자료의 번역이 가장 중대한 과제로 수차례 강조되었던 덕분으로 보인다. 하지만 영어 출간 단행본이 번역서에 치중되어 있어 개설서나 특히 연구서는 상당히 부족한 상황이다. 7개 전문학술지에서 2000-2022년 게재된 한국고전문학 관련 논문은 총104건 (해외 출판 33건, 국내 출판 71건)이었다. 연구 주제는 특별히 연구 경향을 찾을 수 없을 만큼 다양하며, 한문학의 비중이 특히 높았다. 시대적으로는 대부분의 연구가 조선 시대에 주목하고 있었다. 한국학 관련 학술지는 국내외의 연구자들이 영어로 연구성과를 공유하는 장이 되어 가고 있으므로, 역사와 철학에 비하여 비교적 소외되어 왔던 고전문학·한문학 분야에서도 국내의 성과를 적극적으로 해외에 알리고 해외 연구자들과 학문적 소통을 확대해 나아가야 할 필요가 있다.

This study investigated the current status of English books and academic papers published at home and abroad for the purpose of expanding the contact surface of the academic territory of Korean classical and Sino-Korean literature. Books include translations, introductions, monographs, and edited volumes published from 1960 to 2022. Academic papers published from 2000 to 2022 were investigated in four foreign and three domestic journals related to Korean studies. A total of 90 books in the field of Korean classical literature were published from 1960 to 2022 both domestically and internationally (12 published domestically and 78 published overseas). Among them, translated books (including anthologies) accounted for an absolute portion of 77 books. This seems to be due to the fact that the translation of classical materials has been emphasized several times as the most important task since the early days of global Korean Studies. However, since English-published books have been focused on translated books, introductions and especially monographs and edited volumes are in short supply. A total of 104 papers related to Korean classical literature published between 2000 and 2022 in seven specialized academic journals (33 overseas publications, 71 domestic publications) were published. Research topics are so diverse that no particular research trend can be found, and the proportion of Korean Sinographic literature is particularly high. Regarding the period, most studies focused on the Joseon Dynasty. Academic journals related to Korean studies are becoming a forum for researchers at home and abroad to share their research achievements in English. Therefore, even in the fields of classical literature and Sino-Korean literature, which have been relatively neglected compared to history and philosophy, we should actively involve in communication with the global field of Korean Studies.
