이글은 독립협회의 기관지이자 한국 최초의 잡지인 『대조선독립협회회보』에 대한 연구이다. 세계의 정보를 전파하는 역할에 집중했던 『대조선독립협회회보』와 주로 국내의 현안을 주제로 삼은 『독립신문』의 대비를 보면, 독립협회는 교육 정도가 낮은 피지배층을 향한 계몽과 한문 지식을 가진 독서인을 향한 설득이라는 분리된 전략을 수행했다고 평가할 수 있다. 『회보』를 통해 독립협회가 기득권에 가까운 계층을 위해 설정한 학술과 정보가 어떤 양상이었는지 구체적으로 확인할 수 있다. 한국인의 논설보다 세계 정보의 전달을 우선시했던 『회보』는 제국주의에 대응하기 위한 세계의 시사와 자본주의에 적응하기 위한 실용적 학술 및 이에 근거가 되는 과학적 사고방식을 전파하려 했다. 대한제국기 잡지들에서 설정된 교육과 식산이라는 자강(自强)의 두 가지 주요 방법론의 원형은 『회보』에 근원을 두고 있다고 하겠다. 『회보』는 식민지 위기에 대한 능동적 대응을 을사늑약에 앞서 시도했던 것이다. 일관된 편집과 표기의 체제를 지키지 못한 『회보』의 과도기적 양상은 신문에 비해 장기적 조사와 연구를 수행하는 잡지라는 매체를 수용하기 어려웠던 당대의 격변을 반영한 것이다. 그리고 한문, 한글 및 국한문체라는 3가지 문체를 동시에 채용했다는 점에서 혼란은 가중될 수밖에 없었다. 천하의 문서를 두루 수집한다는 초기의 의욕적인 구상이 수행되지 못하고 학술의 수집이 대체로 청일전쟁 이전 청나라의 중역 문헌 정도에서 벗어나지 못했으며, 논설도 초반 발행분에 비해 활력이 떨어지는 양상이다.

This paper is the research about The Chosun, the official bulletin of Independence Club can be evaluated as the first Korean magazine. It mainly focuses on international information on the contrary, The Independent delivers national issues and agendas. In mutual role allocation between two, the dual strategy of Independence Club can be comprehended. The newspaper is mainly for enlightenment toward uneducated ruled class but the magazine is for persuasion toward ruling literati. Before the Protectorate Treaty, the latter actively endeavored to grasp and respond for colonial crisis. I attempt to propose information and academic knowledge toward Korean literati by the planning of Independence Club through the review of the latter. The Chosun prioritizes the dissemination of international information instead leading articles by Korean. Its main information can be categorized as three parts such as international current affairs to deal with colonial crises, practical learning for capitalistic adaptation and scientific way of thinking, the basement for embracing international information. The primary methodology for self-strnengthening in Korean Empire magazine, education and industry is rooted from The Chosun. Due to lacks of coherence in editing and notation system, it appears the product of transitional periods. Also, magazine, which needs more research and longer prospect than newspapers is hardly accommodated in political convulsion in late 19th Century Korea considering its marginal influences comparing with The Independent. Its accepting three different linguistic styles, classical Chinese, Hangul and Korean-Chinese Style increases its confusion as mass-media. Different from enthusiastic planning of collecting papers from whole world in early issues, its academic information mainly limited in double translated documents from Qing dynasty published before Sino-Japanese War. Also the vigor of leading articles is decreased in latter issues.
