지식재산권제도가 국가의 행정행위에 의해 인정된 독점권으로 보던 종전의 시각에서 벗어나, ‘사적인 권리’로 인식하게 시작한 것은 그다지 오래된 것이 아니다. 특히 우리나라에서의 역사는 일천하다. 주지하다시피 1980년대 이후 주요국의 통상압력과 국제협약·FTA 등 외부적인 힘에 의해 법제도가 정비되었고, 이에 지식재산에 대한 인식조차 부족하던 시기에 갑작스럽게 협상과 실무를 담당할 전문가에 대한 수요가 급증하였다. ‘지식재산 교육’이 시대적 사명으로 요청되던 시기, 연세대학교는 인재 양성에 커다란 족적을 남겼다. 1981년 이미 학부 전공과목으로 지식재산 관련 과목들이 개설된 기록이 남아 있으며, 1994년에는 특허법무대학원을 별도의 특수대학원으로 설립하여 실무 교육에 나서는 등 교육에 대한 갈증 해소에 크게 기여한다. 그 결과 1990년에 일반대학원 석사학위논문에서 이미 특허심판제도를 다루고 있으며, 이후 학위과정을 통해 무수히 많은 학자와 실무가들이 배출되었다. 연세대학교의 학풍에 따라 지식재산을 전공한 동문 중에는 해외에서 학위과정을 거쳤거나 국제적으로 활동하는 글로벌 인재가 많고, 한쪽으로 치우치지 않은 균형 잡힌 시각으로 실증적 연구를 통해 결론에 도달하는 사례가 다수 발견된다. 전공을 불문하고 학계와 실무자가 지식재산이라는 매개를 통해 활발하게 교류하고 협업하는 것 또한 연세 지식재산법제 분야의 특징이라고 하겠다.

Intellectual Property Right system in Korea does not have a long history. Since the 1980s, the legal system has been developed by external forces such as trade pressure from major countries and international agreements and FTA. This led to a sudden need for a number of experts to handle the negotiations and practicalities. At the time, Korea didn't even recognize ‘intellectual property’. When intellectual property education was called for as a mission of the times, Yonsei University made a significant mark in training professionals. As early as 1981, intellectual property courses were offered as undergraduate majors, and in 1994, the Graduate School of Patent Law was established as a separate specialty graduate school, contributing significantly to quenching the thirst for intellectual property education. In 1990, a master's thesis in a general graduate school dealt with the patent trial system, and since then, countless practitioners and scholars have graduated from the program. In the spirit of Yonsei University's academic style, many alumni who majored in intellectual property have completed their degrees abroad or are internationally active in the related field, and there are many cases of reaching conclusions through empirical research with a balanced perspective that is not biased toward one side. It is also characteristic of Yonsei's Intellectual Property field that academics and practitioners, regardless of major, actively exchange and collaborate through the medium of Intellectual Property.
