In June 2021, a guideline for clinical testing of functional cosmetic that help improve itching by restoring the function of the skin barrier have been established. In the guideline, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pruritus severity, transdermal water loss (TEWL), and skin hydration have been suggested as primary outcomes; that effectiveness should be statistically significant between treated- and untreated- skin areas. Cetaphil® Moisturizing Lotion, Cetaphil® Moisturizing Cream, Cetaphil® RESTORADERMTM Lotion, and Physiogel® Lotion are typically used in dry skin, sensitive skin, and even atopic dermatitis. They are well known as recovering skin barrier, subsequently improving of skin moisturization and pruritus. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether typical moisturizers are evident to improve skin barrier function, skin moisturization, and pruritus in Korean with very dry skin or mild atopic dermatitis. In this study, the application of typical moisturizers increased skin hydration as well as decreased TEWL in very dry skin with capacitance less than 30 AU. When those moisturizers are used for 4 weeks, the effectiveness was revealed through skin barrier repair and pruritus score lowering subsequent decrease in SCORAD score.
