本稿は、平安後期物語『夜の寝覚』の女主人公の造形と生霊事件の関係について考察したものである。『源氏物語』の六条御息所は、自分が光源氏の正妻葵の上の病床に生霊になって現れたという噂を聞いて、葵の上とみられる女性を苦しめる夢を見る。思い詰めた御息所は出家したものの、死後にも死霊になって源氏の女たちを苦しめた。『夜の寝覚』の中の君は自分の生霊が現れたという噂を聞くにつけ、出家を志したが、妊娠によって出家できなかった。彼女は和泉式部の法華経を引く歌を読みながら宿世を嘆いた。同じく生霊といわれた二人の女性の行く末は、出家と非出家に分かれて、物語の展開に影響した。中の君は現存本以後の末尾欠陥部分において、偽死事件の後、子供たちのために再び生きていくことで『無名草子』に批判された。彼女は、所詮一夫多妻制の下で『蜻蛉日記』の道綱母や和泉式部の絶望を引き継ぎつつ、生きていくことを余儀なくされた一人の女性であった。生霊事件の汚名はそういう中の君の自画像と深くかかわっているものであった。物語の行く末に影響した『夜の寝覚』の生霊事件を『源氏物語』の六条御息所の生霊と読み比べることにより、『夜の寝覚』の女主人公の造形を平安の物語史における一人の女性像として読み直すことができる。

This paper aims to analyze the character of "Yoru no Nezame"´s heroine with ‘living ghost incident’. The Lady Rokujo of "The Tale of Genji" hears a rumor that she appeared as a living ghost on the sick bed of Lady Aoi, the lawful wife of Hikaru Genji, and dreams of tormenting a woman who is believed to be Lady Aoi. After suffering, Lady Rokujo became a bonze, but she became a ghost and tormented the women of Hikaru Genji. Naka no Kimi, the heroine of "Yoru no Nezame", wanted to become a bonze upon hearing a rumor that her living ghost had tormented Lady Ichinomiya, but was unable to. She lamented her destiny by composing a song that quoted the Lotus Sutra by Izumi Shikibu. The fates of the two women, who are also said to have appeared as a living ghost, were divided into those who became a bonze and those who did not, and influenced the stream of the story. Naka no Kimi was criticized by "Mumyo Zoshi" for faking her death and coming back to life for her children in the defective part of the story. She was, after all, a woman who was forced to live under the polygamy system, inheriting the despair of Izumi Shikibu and Michitsuna´s Mother in "Dragonfly Diary." The stigma of the ‘living ghost incident’ was deeply related to Naka no Kimi´s self-portrait. By comparing ‘living ghost incident’ in "Yoru no Nezame" with that of Lady Rokujo in "The Tale of Genji," I can reinterpret the female character in "Yoru no Nezame" as a female figure in the history of Heian Monogatari.
